Applications of forest hydrological science to watershed management in the 21st century
Forest Hydrology: Processes, Management and Assessment, 240–253.
This chapter examines the role of forest hydrological science in the development and application of watershed management in the 21st century. It provides a brief synthesis of anticipated biophysical and socioeconomic changes expected to occur over the coming decades and discuss critical watershed science needs and management responses to maintain watershed ecosystem services in the coming decades. The chapter builds on several recent discussions on the role of ecohydrology in addressing water resource challenges now and in the future. The examples focus on forest watersheds in the southern US forests, as the complex mixture of public and private forest land ownership creates substantial challenges for watershed management at larger spatial scales. Despite the focus on the southern USA, the general principles are applicable to forest watersheds across the globe.
