In attempts to enhance natural products as therapeutic agents, fluorination has emerged as a new tool for synthetic biologists and chemists. In recent articles published in Nature Chemistry and Nature Chemical Biology, the Grininger and Chang groups leveraged their expertise in engineering polyketide biosynthesis to incorporate fluorine into polyketide scaffolds.
