Abstract This entry provides a holistic review of the history of chatbots, chatbots' application in contemporary healthcare, and mental health in crises. It addresses different types of chatbots and summarizes four main features of chatbots applied for mental health in crises, including technological convenience, information, emotional support, and social companionship. Challenges and the future of chatbots for mental health are also discussed and implications for scholars and practitioners are mentioned.
