Role of autoinducer-2 on the adhesion ability of Lactobacillus acidophilus

JOURNAL OF APPLIED MICROBIOLOGY, 107(1), 269–279.

By: B. Buck n, M. Azcarate-Peril n & T. Klaenhammer n

author keywords: autoinducer-2; Caco-2; microarray; probiotic
MeSH headings : Bacterial Adhesion / genetics; Bacterial Proteins / genetics; Caco-2 Cells / microbiology; Carbon-Sulfur Lyases / genetics; DNA, Bacterial / genetics; Gene Expression Regulation, Bacterial; Homoserine / analogs & derivatives; Homoserine / genetics; Homoserine / metabolism; Humans; Lactobacillus acidophilus / genetics; Lactobacillus acidophilus / metabolism; Lactones / metabolism; Microarray Analysis; Mutation; Phylogeny; Quorum Sensing / genetics; RNA, Bacterial / genetics
TL;DR: Investigating whether or not the quorum‐sensing signalling molecule, autoinducer (AI)‐2, was produced by Lactobacillus acidophilus and affected adherence to intestinal epithelial cells found it likely promotes retention in the gastrointestinal tract and communication with the immune system.
