Temperature-Dependent Phage Resistance of Listeria monocytogenes Epidemic Clone II

APPLIED AND ENVIRONMENTAL MICROBIOLOGY, 75(8), 2433–2438.

By: J. Kim n & S. Kathariou n

MeSH headings : Animals; Bacteriophages / growth & development; Bacteriophages / isolation & purification; Disease Outbreaks; Environmental Microbiology; Genotype; Listeria monocytogenes / classification; Listeria monocytogenes / isolation & purification; Listeria monocytogenes / virology; Listeriosis / epidemiology; Listeriosis / microbiology; Listeriosis / veterinary; Meat Products / microbiology; Poultry Diseases / microbiology; Temperature; Turkeys; United States; Viral Plaque Assay
TL;DR: It is found that broad-host-range phages, including phages isolated from the processing plant environment, produced plaques on ECII strains grown at 37°C but not when the bacteria were grown at lower temperatures, suggesting that temperature-dependent phage resistance may represent an important ecological adaptation of L. monocytogenes ECII in processed, cold-stored foods and in the processing Plant environment, where relatively low temperatures prevail. APPLIED AND ENVIRONMENTAL MICROBIOLOGY, 74(21), 6623–6630.

By: J. Kim n, R. Siletzky n & S. Kathariou n

MeSH headings : Animals; Bacteriophages / classification; Bacteriophages / growth & development; Bacteriophages / isolation & purification; DNA, Viral / chemistry; DNA, Viral / genetics; Environmental Microbiology; Food Industry; Food Microbiology; Listeria / virology; Molecular Sequence Data; Sequence Analysis, DNA; Turkeys; United States; Virus Attachment
TL;DR: The isolation of Listeria-specific phages from environmental samples from four turkey processing plants in the United States suggest that phage resistance may be an important component of the ecology of L. monocytogenes in the turkeyprocessing plants. (via Semantic Scholar)
