Density and distribution of Dirofilaria immitis (Nematoda : Filarioidea) third-stage larvae in Aedes sollicitans and Aedes taeniorhynchus (Diptera : Culicidae)

JOURNAL OF MEDICAL ENTOMOLOGY, 37(5), 695–700.

By: B. Parker n

author keywords: Dirofilaria immiti; mosquitoes; Aedes sollicitans; Aedes taeniorhynchus; dog heartworm; vector competence
MeSH headings : Aedes / parasitology; Animals; Dirofilaria immitis; Dirofilariasis / transmission; Dog Diseases / transmission; Dogs; Female; Insect Vectors / parasitology; Larva / parasitology; Species Specificity
TL;DR: Numbers and the distribution of third-stage larvae (L3) were investigated in Aedes sollicitans and Aedes taeniorhynchus female mosquitoes fed Dirofilaria immitis infectious-blood with densities of microfilariae ranging from ≈7,100–43,400 mf/ml. (via Semantic Scholar)

Bunyavirus superinfection and segment reassortment in transovarially infected mosquitoes

JOURNAL OF GENERAL VIROLOGY, 80, 3173–3179.

By: M. Borucki*, L. Chandler*, B. Parker n, C. Blair* & B. Beaty*

MeSH headings : Aedes / growth & development; Aedes / virology; Animals; Encephalitis Virus, California / genetics; Encephalitis Virus, California / physiology; Female; La Crosse virus / genetics; La Crosse virus / physiology; Nucleic Acid Hybridization; Ovary / virology; Reassortant Viruses / genetics; Reassortant Viruses / physiology; Reverse Transcriptase Polymerase Chain Reaction
TL;DR: In these studies, the potential for oral superinfection of TI+ mosquitoes was assessed and approximately 20% of mosquitoes TI+ with either a temperature-sensitive LAC virus or wild-type (wt) LACirus became superinfected by ingesting blood meals containing wt LAC or snowshoe hare hare (SSH) viruses. VARIATION IN MOSQUITO (DIPTERA, CULICIDAE) RELATIVE ABUNDANCE AND DIROFILARIA-IMMITIS (NEMATODA, FILARIOIDEA) VECTOR POTENTIAL IN COASTAL NORTH-CAROLINA

JOURNAL OF MEDICAL ENTOMOLOGY, 30(2), 436–442.

By: B. Parker n

author keywords: CULICIDAE; POPULATION LEVELS; D-IMMITIS
MeSH headings : Aedes / parasitology; Aedes / physiology; Analysis of Variance; Animals; Anopheles / parasitology; Anopheles / physiology; Culex / physiology; Culicidae / parasitology; Culicidae / physiology; Dirofilaria immitis / growth & development; Dirofilaria immitis / isolation & purification; Dirofilariasis / transmission; Female; Insect Vectors / parasitology; Insect Vectors / physiology; Malathion; North Carolina; Population Dynamics; Seasons
TL;DR: At an enzootic focus of Dirofilaria immitis in coastal North Carolina, mosquito populations were sampled June-September 1985 and on several occasions during August-October 1986 and June-August 1987, to identify local vectors and to determine relative abundance and D. immitis infection rates. TEMPERATURE AND SALINITY AS FACTORS INFLUENCING THE SIZE AND REPRODUCTIVE POTENTIALS OF AEDES-DORSALIS (DIPTERA, CULICIDAE)

ANNALS OF THE ENTOMOLOGICAL SOCIETY OF AMERICA, 75(1), 99–102.

By: B. Parker n

TL;DR: Irrespective of the salinity of the medium, stress at 30°C also caused a significant reduction in wing length and numbers of eggs deposited as compared with effects of 21 and 25°C, and evidence of thermally induced deficiencies were increases in the intervals between intake of blood meals and ovipositional efforts.
