Darwinian selection on a selfing locus (Retracted Article. See vol 320, pg 176, 2008)

Shimizu, K. K., Cork, J. M., Caicedo, A. L., Mays, C. A., Moore, R. C., Olsen, K. M., … Purugganan, M. D. (2004, December 17). SCIENCE, Vol. 306, pp. 2081–2084.

MeSH headings : Alleles; Arabidopsis / genetics; Arabidopsis / physiology; Biological Evolution; Chromosome Mapping; Climate; DNA, Intergenic; Genes, Plant; Genetic Variation; Genome, Plant; Geography; Haplotypes; Likelihood Functions; Molecular Sequence Data; Open Reading Frames; Phylogeny; Plant Proteins; Pollen; Polymorphism, Genetic; Polymorphism, Single Nucleotide; Protein Kinases / genetics; Protein Kinases / physiology; Pseudogenes; Recombination, Genetic; Selection, Genetic; Time
TL;DR: Coalescent simulations indicate that ancillary morphological innovations associated with self-pollination can evolve rapidly after the inactivation of the self-incompatibility response, and suggest that the post-Pleistocene expansion of A. thaliana from glacial refugia may have been associated with this adaptive event. Altered Cu metabolism and differential transcription of Cu/ZnSod genes in a Cu/ZnSOD-deficient mutant of maize: Evidence for a Cu-responsive transcription factor

BIOCHEMISTRY, 42(6), 1508–1516.

By: S. Ruzsa n & J. Scandalios n

MeSH headings : Copper / metabolism; Copper / toxicity; Electron Transport Complex IV / metabolism; Enzyme Activation / drug effects; Genes, Plant; Isoenzymes / genetics; Isoenzymes / metabolism; Metallothionein / biosynthesis; Models, Biological; Paraquat / pharmacology; Plant Proteins / genetics; Plant Proteins / metabolism; Plant Proteins / physiology; Superoxide Dismutase / deficiency; Superoxide Dismutase / genetics; Superoxide Dismutase / metabolism; Transcription Factors / physiology; Transcription, Genetic / drug effects; Zea mays / drug effects; Zea mays / enzymology; Zea mays / genetics; Zinc / metabolism; Zinc / pharmacology
TL;DR: High transcript levels of a constitutively expressed metallothionein, suggesting increased copper chelation capacity and creating a general copper-deprivation effect, seem to be a likely cause of the reduced levels of copper enzyme activity and Cu/ZnSod gene transcripts. Catalase gene expression in response to chronic high temperature stress in maize

PLANT SCIENCE, 156(1), 103–110.

By: J. Scandalios n, A. Acevedo n & S. Ruzsa n

author keywords: catalase gene expression; chronic high temperature stress; maize
TL;DR: These observations, along with the drastic reduction in seed germination and seedling height at chronically elevated growth temperatures, suggest that developmental arrest, rather than oxidative stress, might be the cause for the observed results relative to Cat gene expression under such conditions.
