Aram Amassian joined NC State in summer 2018 as a Chancellor’s Faculty Excellence Program cluster hire in Carbon Electronics and an associate professor in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering. His research is highly interdisciplinary and focuses on emerging semiconductors for thin film electronic, optoelectronic and photovoltaic applications. Amassian is internationally renowned for his work on solution-processing of organic, colloidal quantum dot and hybrid perovskites, where he has introduced in situ diagnostics tools to understand the complex solidification process of organic and hybrid materials for functional electronic materials and devices. His current research focus is the development of Materials Acceleration Platforms (MAPs) for semiconductor and energy materials research to solve complex materials-based problems and accelerate innovation. Amassian was previously a founding member of the faculty at the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) in Saudi Arabia. He served as assistant and associate professor in Materials Science and Engineering and was a founding member of the KAUST Solar Center. He has worked extensively with industry, including SABIC, Boeing and Sony. He is Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry and the Optical Society of America (Optica). He was named the Career Development SABIC Chair for his work on solution-processed optoelectronic materials. He has also been recognized as a highly cited researcher (Web of Science - Clarivate) Since 2020. He received his bachelor of engineering and Ph.D. in engineering physics at Ecole Polytechnique de Montreal in Canada. He was a postdoctoral associate in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at Cornell University and at the Cornell High Energy Synchrotron Source (CHESS). He was awarded the NSERC (Canada) postdoctoral fellowship, the NSERC post-graduate fellowship, as well as the American Vacuum Society’s Electronic Materials Postdoctoral award. He is widely published in peer-reviewed journals (>200 publications).

Single crystal hybrid perovskite field-effect transistors

NATURE COMMUNICATIONS, 9.

By: W. Yu*, F. Li*, L. Yu*, M. Niazi*, Y. Zou*, D. Corzo*, A. Basu*, C. Ma* ...

TL;DR: A spatially-confined inverse temperature crystallization strategy is demonstrated which synthesizes micrometre-thin single crystals of methylammonium lead halide perovskites MAPbX3 with sub-nanometer surface roughness and very low surface contamination, paving the way for integrating hybrid perovkite crystals into printed, flexible and transparent electronics. The quantum-confined Stark effect in layered hybrid perovskites mediated by orientational polarizability of confined dipoles

NATURE COMMUNICATIONS, 9.

TL;DR: Large Stark effects in easily made layered hybrid perovskites and a modulation mechanism related to the orientational polarizability of dipolar cations confined within these self-assembled quantum wells are presented. (via Semantic Scholar)

Effects of High Temperature and Thermal Cycling on the Performance of Perovskite Solar Cells: Acceleration of Charge Recombination and Deterioration of Charge Extraction

ACS Applied Materials & Interfaces, 9(40), 35018–35029.

By: A. Sheikh*, R. Munir*, M. Haque*, A. Bera*, W. Hu*, P. Shaikh*, A. Amassian*, T. Wu*

author keywords: perovskite solar cell; thermal cycle; spiro-OMeTAD; charge transfer; charge recombination
TL;DR: The results revealed that both thermal cycling and high temperatures produce irreversible detrimental effects on the PSC performance because of the deteriorated interfacial photocarrier extraction, suggesting that the development of robust charge transporters and proper interface engineering are critical for the deployment of perovskite PVs in harsh thermal environments. Hybrid Doping of Few-Layer Graphene via a Combination of Intercalation and Surface Doping

ACS Applied Materials & Interfaces, 9(23), 20020–20028.

author keywords: few-layer graphene; transparent conducting electrode; intercalation; molecular doping; work function; electrical transport
TL;DR: This work shows that few-layer graphene (FLG) can be doped using a hybrid approach, effectively combining surface doping by larger (metal-)organic molecules and intercalation of smaller molecules, such as Br2 and FeCl3, into the bulk. (via Semantic Scholar)

Morphology Development in Solution-Processed Functional Organic Blend Films: An In Situ Viewpoint

Chemical Reviews, 117(9), 6332–6366.

By: L. Richter*, D. DeLongchamp* & A. Amassian*

TL;DR: In this Review, insights into the fundamentals of solution-based film deposition afforded by recent state-of-the-art in situ measurements of functional film drying are highlighted and emphasis is placed on multimodal studies that combine surface-sensitive X-ray scattering with optical characterization to clearly define the evolution of solute structure with film thickness.
