By: S. Jones n, A. Valenzisi n, S. Sontakke n, K. Sprayberry*, R. Maggi n, B. Hegarty n, E. Breitschwerdt n

author keywords: insect cell culture medium; mare reproductive loss syndrome; 16S rDNA; DNA sequencing
MeSH headings : Animals; Bacteria / genetics; Bacteria / isolation & purification; Bacterial Infections / microbiology; Bacterial Infections / pathology; Bacterial Infections / veterinary; Culture Media; Culture Techniques / veterinary; Disease Outbreaks / veterinary; Horse Diseases / microbiology; Horse Diseases / pathology; Horses; Insecta / cytology; Insecta / microbiology; Kentucky / epidemiology; Pericardial Effusion / microbiology; Pericardial Effusion / pathology; Pericarditis / microbiology; Pericarditis / pathology; Pericarditis / veterinary; Pilot Projects; Retrospective Studies
TL;DR: Bacterial isolation from equine pericardial fluid samples was attempted using an insect cell culture growth medium (ICCGM), but a similar or novel caterpillar-associated bacteria was not identified; however, use of an ICCGM might enhance isolation of bacteria from equines pericARDial fluid. Evaluation of FIV protein-expressing VEE-replicon vaccine vectors in cats

VACCINE, 21(3-4), 258–268.

By: M. Burkhard n, L. Valenski n, S. Leavell n, G. Dean n & W. Tompkins n

author keywords: Venezuelan equine encephalitis (VEE) virus; VEE-replicon particles; feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV)
MeSH headings : Animals; Antibodies, Viral / biosynthesis; Antibodies, Viral / blood; Cats; Encephalitis Virus, Venezuelan Equine / genetics; Evaluation Studies as Topic; Feline Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome / immunology; Female; Genetic Vectors / genetics; Glycoproteins; Immunodeficiency Virus, Feline / immunology; T-Lymphocyte Subsets / immunology; T-Lymphocytes, Cytotoxic / immunology; T-Lymphocytes, Regulatory / immunology; Vaccines, Synthetic / administration & dosage; Vaccines, Synthetic / immunology; Vagina / immunology; Vagina / virology; Viral Envelope Proteins; Viral Vaccines / administration & dosage; Viral Vaccines / immunology; Viremia / blood
TL;DR: Despite induction of Fiv-specific immune responses and nonspecific suppressor responses, all cats became infected following vaginal challenge with high dose, pathogenic cell-associated FIV-NCSU, although relative early maintenance of CD4+ cells was seen in F IV-immunized cats.
