Physiological responses in swine treated with water containing sodium bicarbonate as a prophylactic for gastric ulcers

Journal of Animal Science, 82(9), 2757–2763.

By: J. Cole n, R. Argenzio n & J. Eisemann n

MeSH headings : Acid-Base Equilibrium / drug effects; Acid-Base Equilibrium / physiology; Adaptation, Physiological; Animals; Anti-Ulcer Agents / pharmacology; Drinking; Hydrogen-Ion Concentration; Male; Random Allocation; Sodium / urine; Sodium Bicarbonate / metabolism; Sodium Bicarbonate / pharmacology; Stomach / chemistry; Stomach Ulcer / prevention & control; Stomach Ulcer / veterinary; Swine / metabolism; Swine / physiology; Swine Diseases / prevention & control
TL;DR: Results indicate that sodium bicarbonate can safely be added to the water supply for pigs, with no clinically relevant alterations in acid-base balance because the animals readily compensate for buffer intake. (via Semantic Scholar)

Cyclooxygenase blockade and exogenous glutamine enhance sodium absorption in infected bovine ileum

American Journal of Physiology-Gastrointestinal and Liver Physiology, 284(3), G516–G524.

By: J. Cole*, A. Blikslager*, E. Hunt n, J. Gookin* & R. Argenzio*

author keywords: Cryptosporidium parvum; Na/H exchanger 3; cyclooxygenase-2; diarrhea
MeSH headings : Animals; Biological Transport, Active; Blotting, Western; Cattle; Chlorine; Cryptosporidiosis / metabolism; Cryptosporidiosis / parasitology; Cryptosporidium parvum; Cyclooxygenase 1; Cyclooxygenase 2; Cyclooxygenase 2 Inhibitors; Cyclooxygenase Inhibitors / pharmacology; Glutamine / pharmacology; Ileum / metabolism; Ileum / parasitology; Ileum / pathology; Inflammation / pathology; Intestinal Absorption / drug effects; Intestinal Absorption / physiology; Isoenzymes / metabolism; Male; Prostaglandin-Endoperoxide Synthases / metabolism; Radioisotopes; Sodium / metabolism; Sodium Radioisotopes; Tissue Fixation
TL;DR: It is shown that prostanoids inhibit electroneneutral sodium absorption in Cryptosporidium parvum-infected porcine ileum, whereas glutamine stimulates electroneutral sodium absorption via a cyclooxygenase (COX)-dependent pathway, and glutamine increases sodium uptake by an electrogenic mechanism in this same tissue.
