Propensity of Lignin to Associate: Light Scattering Photometry Study with Native Lignins

BIOMACROMOLECULES, 9(12), 3362–3369.

By: S. Contreras n, A. Gaspar n, A. Guerra n, L. Lucia n & D. Argyropoulos n

MeSH headings : Eucalyptus / chemistry; Hydrogen Bonding; Light; Lignin / chemistry; Lignin / isolation & purification; Molecular Weight; Photometry; Picea / chemistry; Scattering, Radiation; Solubility; Solutions; Solvents / chemistry
TL;DR: The challenges and opportunities of measuring the specific refractive index increment (dn/dC) of lignin solutions and determining the kinetics of the dissociation process were investigated and insight is offered into the aggregation and ensuing dissociative events that operate within the lignIn macromolecules. PHYTOCHEMISTRY, 68(20), 2570–2583.

By: A. Guerra n, A. Gaspar n, S. Contreras n, L. Lucia n, C. Crestini* & D. ArgyropouloS n

author keywords: enzymatic mild acidolysis lignin; milled wood lignin; association; aggregation; lignin; southern pine; Pinus palustris; Norway spruce; Picea abies; douglas fir; Pseudotsuga menziesi; white fir; Abies concolor; Pinaceae; redwood; Sequoia sempervirens; Taxodiaceae; Eucalyptus globulus; myrtaceae; wheat Triticum aestivton; gramineae
MeSH headings : Chromatography, Gel; Lignin / analogs & derivatives; Lignin / isolation & purification; Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy; Magnoliopsida / chemistry; Molecular Weight; Species Specificity; Tracheophyta / chemistry
TL;DR: Lignin solutions incubated at 4 degrees C showed an associative behaviour manifested by an increase in the weight and number average molecular weights for some species, and lignins from softwoods were found to associate/dissociate to a greater extent than lignin from E. globulus and straw.
