Brown Stink Bug (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae) Damage to Seedling Corn and Impact on Grain Yield

JOURNAL OF INSECT SCIENCE, 21(2).

By: T. Bryant*, A. Babu n & D. Reisig n

Ed(s): F. Huang

author keywords: brown stink bug; field corn; damage rating scale
MeSH headings : Animals; Biomass; Female; Hemiptera; Herbivory; Insect Control; Male; Seedlings; Zea mays
TL;DR: The need for early and frequent scouting of corn to determine the risk of damage and yield loss from brown stink bugs is emphasized, and results from this study can be used to help develop management programs forbrown stink bugs in the early vegetative stages of field corn. Effects of chlorantraniliprole residual on Helicoverpa zea in B t and non‐ B t cotton

Pest Management Science, 77(5), 2367–2374.

By: A. Babu n, D. Reisig n, M. Pes, C. Ranger*, N. Chamkasem* & M. Reding*

author keywords: Bacillus thuringiensis; Cry1Ac; Cry1F; sublethal effects
MeSH headings : Animals; Bacillus thuringiensis / genetics; Bacterial Proteins / genetics; Endotoxins; Gossypium / genetics; Hemolysin Proteins / genetics; Larva; Moths / genetics; Plants, Genetically Modified; Zea mays / genetics; ortho-Aminobenzoates
TL;DR: The findings complement the recommendation to use chlorantraniliprole for managing H. zea in cotton, given its long-residual effects, but the utility of chlorantanilip role as a Bt-resistance management tool for H.Zea remains unclear. (via Semantic Scholar)

Baseline Flight Potential of Euschistus servus (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae) and Its Implications on Local Dispersal

Environmental Entomology, 49(3), 699–708.

By: A. Babu n, A. Del Pozo-Valdivia* & D. Reisig n

Ed(s): C. Ranger

author keywords: arm-pivoting flight mill; stink bug; plant host use; body weight
MeSH headings : Animals; Crops, Agricultural; Heteroptera; Plant Weeds; Southeastern United States; Zea mays
TL;DR: The baseline dispersal potential information generated from this study can be extrapolated to the farmscape level aiming to develop, plan, and implement E. servus management programs. (via Semantic Scholar)

Influence of Weed Manipulation in Field Borders on Brown Stink Bug (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae) Densities and Damage in Field Corn

Environmental Entomology, 48(2), 444–453.

By: A. Babu n, D. Reisig n, J. Walgenbach n, R. Heiniger n & W. Everman n

author keywords: Euschistus servus; ecology; movement; mowing; farmscape
MeSH headings : Animals; Heteroptera; Insect Control / methods; Plant Weeds; Population Density; Population Dynamics; Soybeans; Weed Control; Zea mays
TL;DR: To reduce densities of E. servus in corn by manipulating the weedy field borders with mowing and applications of dicamba herbicide, manipulations of weeds did not lead to any significant changes in density, and evidence suggested that a prominent external source of E.'s servus, other than field-bordering weeds, in the farmscape was likely driving densities in corn.
