For a work about cross-referencing and how the total can be more than the sum of its parts, this seems remiss. Brill’s lack of copyediting has not done favors to the many authors whose first language is not English, as the errors and idiosyncratic language distract from their substantive contributions. In Charity and Welfare, James Brodman surveys the networks of hospitals and charitable institutions in medieval Catalonia that gave food to the hungry, dowries to indigent women, shelter to the homeless, and palliative care to the ill. The book shows how, just as contemporary society struggles with the issues of welfare reform, managed health care, and assistance to the elderly, so did the people of the Middle Ages deal with questions of who to help and what criteria to use to make those decisions. In their assessments, they made a clear distinction between charity, aid given gratuitously and indiscriminately to others, and welfare, assistance targeted toward certain groups for particular, desired ends. The author concludes that Catalan hospitals depended upon the close collaboration of church and state, a mixture of voluntary and public funding, and a combination of religious and secular values.}, number={4}, journal={AMERICAN HISTORICAL REVIEW}, author={Banker, JR}, year={1999}, month={Oct}, pages={1363–1364} } @inbook{banker_1998, title={Le confraternite e I pellgrini: Vie, uomini e incariche nei pellegrinaggion nei testamenti di Sansepolcro}, booktitle={Vie di pellegrinaggio medievale attraverso l'Alta Valle del Tevere: Atti del Convegno: Sansepolcro, 27-28 settembre 1996}, publisher={Citta` di Castello (Perugia): Petruzzi ; Sansepolcro: Comune di Sansepolcro}, author={Banker, J.}, year={1998}, pages={23–34} } @misc{banker_1998, title={The Palazzo Vecchio, 1298-1532: Government, architecture, and imagery in the civic palace of the Florentine Republic, by N.
