Effects of endophyte-infected tall fescue seed and protein supplementation on stocker steers: I. Growth performance and hemodynamic responses

Journal of Animal Science, 97(9), 3776–3785.

By: R. Poole n, C. Womble n, M. Poore n, D. Poole n & C. Pickworth n

author keywords: fescue toxicosis; growth; hemodynamics; stocker steers
MeSH headings : Animal Feed / analysis; Animals; Body Weight; Cattle / growth & development; Cattle / physiology; Cattle Diseases / prevention & control; Diet / veterinary; Dietary Supplements / analysis; Endophytes / physiology; Ergot Alkaloids / adverse effects; Hemodynamics; Lolium / chemistry; Lolium / microbiology; Male; Plant Poisoning / prevention & control; Plant Poisoning / veterinary; Prolactin / blood; Proteins / analysis; Random Allocation; Seeds / chemistry; Seeds / microbiology
TL;DR: Based on the data, exposure to low to moderate levels of ergot alkaloids during the stocker phase had a negative impact on hemodynamic responses and supplemental CP had minimal impact to alleviate symptoms and feeding additional protein above established requirements is not expected to help alleviate fescue toxicosis.
