This exploratory qualitative case study aims to understand the academic advising experiences of Black males at a large urban, predominantly White institution. Participants in this study (a) experienced a number of process-related challenges, including difficulties with scheduling advising appointments and accessing their academic advisor; (b) stressed the role of race and culture in academic advising; and (c) highlighted positive outcomes of formal and informal advising. Drawing on data from a self-reported survey instrument completed by a sample of 145 Black men across 10 higher education institutions, a series of t-tests were conducted to explore differences between straight and queer Black men in mindset (growth and fixed) and conformity to masculine norms. Results suggested negative attitudes toward queerness are both significantly positively associated with traditional masculinities and fixed mindset among Black men. Results also indicated there are significant differences in mindset and masculinities between straight and queer Black men. Considerations for research and practice are discussed.}, number={1}, journal={SPECTRUM}, author={Travers, Christopher and Duran, Antonio and Craig, John}, year={2018}, pages={47–57} }
