He has authored or co-authored more than 500 papers and articles, and 4 books. His new book Natural Resource Leadership and Management: A Practical Guide for Professionals has just been published by Routledge Focus in 2022. Fred was professor 10 years at the University of Georgia, and then Project Leader of a Forest Service Economics Research Unit in North Carolina for 3 years. Fred then advanced to become Professor and Department Head of Forestry and Environmental Resources at NC State for 10 years, and was the Founder and Co-Director of the Southern Forest Resource Assessment Consortium (SOFAC) for 25 years. After service as Head, Fred was a Fulbright Scholar for six months in Argentina and Uruguay, and consulted for the World Bank and has cooperated with scientists in Latin America, Vietnam, Laos, and China as a forest economist for two decades. He currently leads many research projects and graduate students in natural resource policy and forest economics. He was President of the Society of American Foresters in 2017, and served as a member of its governing board from 2005 to 2008 and from 2016 to 2018.
