The idea of resilience emphasizes a maintenance of social-ecological relationships that allows for change and adaptability while at the same time retaining a general continuity of form, be it of land use practices or of landscapes. The chapter suggests that the historical resilience of the Burgundian landscape may be a model for how to study rural land use changes over time. It describes several main agrarian land use types in Burgundy and highlights specific facets of the landscapes that have persisted, evolved or disappeared over time. The agrarian economy of Burgundy has long produced a reliable source of wealth for the area's elite: the Celtic Aedui polity from agricultural region had a lucrative trading network within Celtic Europe and beyond to the Roman Empire, exporting hams, horses and ironwork.}, journal={Historical Ecologies, Heterarchies and Transtemporal Landscapes}, publisher={Routledge}, author={Murray, Seth and Jones, Elizabeth Anne and Madry, Scott}, year={2019}, month={Apr}, pages={101–117} } @misc{jones_westin_madry_murray_moen_tickner_2017, title={How to Operationalise Collaborative Research}, url={http://dx.doi.org/10.1017/9781108355780.008}, DOI={10.1017/9781108355780.008}, abstractNote={A summary is not available for this content so a preview has been provided. In the last decade, constraints and opportunities have shifted, and farmers have diversified their economic strategies in order to cope with a rise in rural tourism and second home ownership, an expansion of leisure activities into what has historically been an agricultural territory, and the implications that the uncertain future of the European Union's CAP has for small family farmers in this area. We examine this diversification of household economic strategies to include non-agricultural activities and the implications it has for economic health and rural livelihoods in the Basque region. }, number={1}, journal={Anthropological Journal of European Cultures}, publisher={Berghahn Books}, author={Welch-Devine, Meredith and Murray, Seth}, year={2011}, month={Mar}, pages={69–88} } @article{madry_jones_murray_tickner_2011, title={Une micro-histoire de la terre et de l'utilisation des ressources : l'intégration des SIG (Systèmes d'Information Géographique historiques) et des données qui y sont liées en Bourgogne du Sud, France}, volume={208}, url={https://icaci.org/files/documents/national_reports/2007-2011/France.pdf}, journal={Le Monde des Cartes}, author={Madry, Scott and Jones, Anne Elisabeth and Murray, Seth and Tickner, Amanda}, year={2011}, pages={75–94} } @misc{scholl_murray_crumley_2010, title={Comparing trajectories of climate, class, and production: an historical ecology of American yeomen}, url={http://dx.doi.org/10.1017/cbo9780511760242.016}, DOI={10.1017/cbo9780511760242.016}, abstractNote={Comparing trajectories of climate, class, and production : an historical ecology of American yeomen}, journal={Environmental Social Sciences}, publisher={Cambridge University Press}, author={Scholl, Michael D. and Murray, D.
