Integrated microneedle-smartphone nucleic acid amplification platform for in-field diagnosis of plant diseases

BIOSENSORS & BIOELECTRONICS, 187.

By: R. Paul n, E. Ostermann n, Y. Chen n, A. Saville n, Y. Yang*, Z. Gu*, A. Whitfield n, J. Ristaino n, Q. Wei n

author keywords: Plant disease diagnostics; Nucleic acid extraction; Microneedle; Isothermal amplification; Smartphone
MeSH headings : Biosensing Techniques; Molecular Diagnostic Techniques; Nucleic Acid Amplification Techniques; Plant Diseases; Smartphone
TL;DR: It is found that the MN patch containing as few as a single needle tip successfully extracted enough RNA for RT-PCR or RT-LAMP analysis, and MN-extracted RNA samples remained stable on MN surfaces for up to three days. (via Semantic Scholar)

By: R. Paul n, E. Ostermann n & Q. Wei n

author keywords: Point-of-care diagnostics; DNA/RNA extraction; Nucleic acid amplification; Raw samples; Infectious diseases; Plant diseases
MeSH headings : Betacoronavirus / isolation & purification; COVID-19; Chemical Fractionation / instrumentation; Chemical Fractionation / methods; Communicable Diseases / diagnosis; Communicable Diseases / microbiology; Communicable Diseases / parasitology; Communicable Diseases / virology; Coronavirus Infections / diagnosis; Coronavirus Infections / virology; Equipment Design; Humans; Lab-On-A-Chip Devices; Nucleic Acid Amplification Techniques / instrumentation; Nucleic Acid Amplification Techniques / methods; Nucleic Acids / blood; Nucleic Acids / isolation & purification; Nucleic Acids / urine; Pandemics; Plant Diseases / microbiology; Plant Diseases / parasitology; Plant Diseases / virology; Pneumonia, Viral / diagnosis; Pneumonia, Viral / virology; Point-of-Care Systems; SARS-CoV-2
TL;DR: This review focuses on novel devices or methods that have demonstrated applicability and robustness for the isolation of high-quality nucleic acid from complex raw samples, such as human blood, saliva, sputum, nasal swabs, urine, and plant tissues that would pave the road for the “sample-in-result-out” diagnosis of human and plant diseases, especially in remote or resource-limited settings.
