author keywords: molecular paleontology; heme; porphyrin; hemoglobin; evolution; chemical evolution; preservation
TL;DR: The evolution and functional diversity of heme-bound hemoglobin proteins in vertebrates is discussed, along with the preservation of these molecules in the fossil record, which lays the groundwork necessary to explore hemoglobin as a means to investigate the paleobiology of extinct taxa, including non-avian dinosaurs.
