Large anelasticity and associated energy dissipation in single-crystalline nanowires

Nature Nanotechnology, 10(8), 687–691.

Contributors: G. Cheng n, C. Miao*, Q. Qin n, J. Li n, F. Xu n, H. Haftbaradaran*, E. Dickey n, H. Gao*, Y. Zhu n

TL;DR: It is shown that single-crystalline ZnO and p-doped Si nanowires can exhibit anelastic behaviour that is up to four orders of magnitude larger than the largest anelastically observed in bulk materials, with a timescale on the order of minutes, suggesting that crystalline Nanowires with point defects are promising materials for energy damping applications. TL;DR: Discovery of a new, nano-sized superlattice (NSS) phase in ball-milled Fe alloys, which maintains coherency with the BCC matrix up to at least 913 °C, and provides a new opportunity for developing high-strength ferritic alloys for high temperature applications. (via Semantic Scholar)
