All of the twenty-four PSTs in our study identified as white and speakers of Standardized English. We rated the quality of the PSTs’ Critical Language Awareness for teaching through their contributions to weekly online discussions. We also qualitatively analyzed the PSTs’ discussions for themes and tensions in their understanding of teaching Critical Language Awareness. We found that the PSTs’ understanding and appreciation for dialect diversity and code-switching was strong, and most PSTs wanted to teach more critical aspects of language variation, such as how systems of privilege are reinforced through language ideologies. However, many PSTs avoided acknowledging their own white privilege and were less skilled and comfortable teaching about power structures than dialect diversity.}, journal={LINGUISTICS AND EDUCATION}, author={Godley, Amanda J. and Reaser, Jefferey and Moore, Kaylan G.}, year={2015}, month={Dec}, pages={41–54} } @article{hatcher_teague_reaser_2015, title={Rethinking Prescriptivism's Role in Language Change}, volume={90}, ISSN={0003-1283 1527-2133}, url={http://dx.doi.org/10.1215/00031283-3442161}, DOI={10.1215/00031283-3442161}, abstractNote={Book Review| November 01 2015 Rethinking Prescriptivism's Role in Language Change Fixing English: Prescriptivism and Language History. Despite the importance of such information, sociolinguistic knowledge has not yet permeated mainstream American education even though there have been some who appealed for it roughly fifty years before modern sociolinguistic study emerged. The first president of the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE), Fred Newton Scott, encouraged the inclusion of information about language diversity to be included as part of English studies (Carpenter, Baker, and Scott 1908). While it may be tempting to conclude that linguists have not been proactive enough in making the general public aware of the importance of their findings, the continued embrace of traditional grammar instruction is probably more attributable to revered notions of traditional grammar instruction as opposed to a failing of any specific groups, be they linguists or English teachers.}, journal={Linguistics at School}, publisher={Cambridge University Press}, author={Reaser, Jeffrey}, year={2010}, month={Jan}, pages={91–105} } @article{reaser_2010, title={Using Media to Teach About Language}, volume={4}, ISSN={1749-818X}, url={http://dx.doi.org/10.1111/j.1749-818x.2010.00237.x}, DOI={10.1111/j.1749-818x.2010.00237.x}, abstractNote={Abstract}, number={9}, journal={Language and Linguistics Compass}, publisher={Wiley}, author={Reaser, Jeffrey}, year={2010}, month={Sep}, pages={782–792} } @article{wise_reaser_2009, title={EMPOWERING STUDENTS THROUGH LITERACY: A NEW TYPE OF SOCIAL CHANGE}, volume={84}, ISSN={0003-1283 1527-2133}, url={http://dx.doi.org/10.1215/00031283-2009-021}, DOI={10.1215/00031283-2009-021}, abstractNote={Review Article| May 01 2009 EMPOWERING STUDENTS THROUGH LITERACY: A NEW TYPE OF SOCIAL CHANGE: The Right to Literacy in Secondary Schools: Creating a Culture of Thinking EMPOWERING STUDENTS THROUGH LITERACY: A NEW TYPE OF SOCIAL CHANGE The Right to Literacy in Secondary Schools: Creating a Culture of Thinking Edited by Suzanne Plaut New York: Teachers College Press, 2009. Wiley, Literacy and language diversity in the United States. 2nd ed. Washington, DC: Center for Applied Linguistics, 2005. Pp. x, 267. Pb $19.95. Literacy and language diversity in the United States (henceforth, Literacy) combines perspectives from diverse linguistic disciplines, primarily studies of English as a second/foreign language (EFL) and English dialectology. Literacy investigates challenges faced by “language minorities” (people who speak as a first or only language a language other than English, and those who speak vernacular English dialects) in schools and communities, and the pedagogical and societal implications of these challenges. The primary focus is summarized in the introductory chapter: Literacy “explores the major issues that scholars and educators face concerning fair and effective educational policies and practices for language minority learners” (p. 4). Chap. 1 surveys several of these issues, including defining and measuring literacy; ideological beliefs about and attitudes toward literacy; and the political, social, and educational implications of such ideologies.}, number={5}, journal={Language in Society}, publisher={Cambridge University Press (CUP)}, author={Reaser, Jeffrey}, year={2007}, month={Nov}, pages={781–785} } @article{wolfram_reaser_2006, place={Raleigh, NC}, title={Language Tells North Carolina History}, volume={45}, number={2}, journal={Tar Heel Junior Historian}, publisher={North Carolina Museum of History}, author={Wolfram, Walt and Reaser, Jeffrey}, year={2006}, pages={31–33} } @inbook{wolfram_childs_reaser_torbert_2005, place={Malden, MA}, title={Islands of Diversity}, booktitle={Voices of American English}, publisher={Blackwell}, author={Wolfram, Walt and Childs, Becky and Reaser, Jeffrey and Torbert, Benjamin}, editor={Wolfram, Walt and Ward, BenEditors}, year={2005}, pages={183–188} } @article{reaser_2004, title={A quantitative sociolinguistic analysis of Bahamian copula absence: Morphosyntactic evidence from Abaco Island, The Bahamas}, volume={19}, ISSN={["1569-9870"]}, DOI={10.1075/jpcl.19.1.02rea}, abstractNote={The study of isolated Bahamian enclaves provides essential data with which to address sociolinguistic questions: Do monoethnic enclaves foster ethnolinguistic distinctiveness and if so, which features and structures demarcate these varieties? How homogenous is linguistic patterning in the Bahamas, given the non-continuous settlement, subsequent urbanization of some areas, and the ethnic diversity and segregation still apparent in Bahamian society? To what extent does copula absence in out island speech communities align with potential donor sources such as Southern White Vernacular English, African American Vernacular English, and Gullah? The comparison of previous analyses of other parts of the Bahamas with new data from Abaco Island reveals the multiplicity of linguistic patterning in the Bahamas. Cherokee Sound and Sandy Point, historically isolated monoethnic enclaves, represent two dissimilar linguistic situations. Cherokee Sound involves a transplant community of approximately 165 white loyalists founded in the late 1700s Sandy Point represents the traditional Afro-Bahamian community of approximately 400 residents settled by ex-slaves in the 19th century. This study reveals variation within the copula systems of Bahamian varieties sensitive to ethnicity, urban-ness, and regionality, as well as the multiple input varieties and diverse histories of the speech communities.}, number={1}, journal={JOURNAL OF PIDGIN AND CREOLE LANGUAGES}, author={Reaser, J}, year={2004}, pages={1–40} } @article{thomas_reaser_2004, title={Delimiting perceptual cues used for the ethnic labeling of African American and European American voices}, volume={8}, ISSN={["1360-6441"]}, DOI={10.1111/j.1467-9841.2004.00251.x}, abstractNote={A review of speech identification studies examining the abilities of listeners to distinguish African American and European American voices shows that Americans can recognize many African American voices with a high degree of accuracy even in the absence of stereotypical morphosyntactic and lexical features. Experiments to determine what cues listeners use to distinguish ethnicity have not yielded such consistent results, perhaps suggesting that listeners may access a wide variety of cues if necessary. An experiment involving African Americans with features of a European American vernacular demonstrated that African Americans with atypical features are difficult for listeners to identify. Analysis suggested that vowel quality and intonation could have misled respondents but did not rule out timing and voice quality as factors in identification.}, number={1}, journal={JOURNAL OF SOCIOLINGUISTICS}, author={Thomas, ER and Reaser, J}, year={2004}, month={Feb}, pages={54–87} } @article{reaser_2003, title={A quantitative approach to (sub)registers: the case of 'Sports Announcer Talk'}, volume={5}, ISSN={["1461-4456"]}, DOI={10.1177/14614456030053002}, abstractNote={ Despite studies such as Biber (1988), quantitative methodologies remain under-exploited resources in discourse analysis. This study employs a quantitative, statistical approach to re-examine and rethink the rather well-explored topic of register. Using the extensively documented register of Sports Announcer Talk (SAT) as a case study, careful quantitative analysis exposes the limitations of traditional descriptive approaches to registers. Quantitative analysis reveals significant inter-register variation in the distribution of core SAT features in a television broadcast and a radio broadcast of a basketball game. Further, SAT features appear to function differently in the broadcasts: out of necessity in the radio broadcast and symbolically in the television broadcast. Such inter-register variation of variable frequency and feature function may be a product of differences in communication situation and communicative function related to broadcast media. Quantitative approaches allow more precise defining of (sub)registers and provide the researcher insight into the communicative function of discourse features. }, number={3}, journal={DISCOURSE STUDIES}, author={Reaser, J}, year={2003}, month={Aug}, pages={303–321} } @inbook{childs_reaser_wolfram_2003, place={Philadelphia/Amsterdam}, series={Varieties of English Around the World}, title={Defining Ethnic Varieties in the Bahamas: Phonological Accommodation in Black and White Enclave Communities}, booktitle={Contact Englishes of the Eastern Caribbean}, publisher={John Benjamins}, author={Childs, Becky and Reaser, Jeffrey and Wolfram, Walt}, editor={Aceto, Michael and Williams, Jeffrey P.Editors}, year={2003}, pages={1–28}, collection={Varieties of English Around the World} } @article{wolfram_childs_reaser_torbert_2003, title={Islands of Diversity}, journal={Language Magazine}, author={Wolfram, Walt and Childs, Becky and Reaser, Jeffrey and Torbert, Benjamin}, year={2003}, month={Feb}, pages={28–31} } @inproceedings{reaser_2002, title={Copula Absence in Bahamian Speech: Evidence from Ethnically Contrastive Enclaves, Abaco Island, Bahamas}, booktitle={The Proceedings of 14th Biennial Conference of the Society for Caribbean Linguistics}, author={Reaser, Jeffrey}, year={2002} }
