Cutting experiments were conducted in order to measure temperatures at remote locations on the tool rake face and at the tool/holder interface. The tool/holder interface temperatures were used as inputs into the boundary-element model. Heat input into the tool was adjusted until predicted temperatures on the rake face agreed with experimental results. The proportion of the machining power conducted into the tool as heat was determined as a function of the cutting geometry, specific cutting energy, and cutting speed.}, number={4}, journal={EXPERIMENTAL HEAT TRANSFER}, author={Sheikh-Ahmad, JY and Lewandowski, CM and Bailey, JA and Stewart, JS}, year={2003}, pages={255–271} } @article{sheikh-ahmad_stewart_feld_2003, title={Failure characteristics of diamond-coated carbides in machining wood-based composites}, volume={255}, ISSN={["0043-1648"]}, DOI={10.1016/S0043-1648(03)00179-0}, abstractNote={This paper describes results from recent research projects aimed at understanding the failure mechanisms of diamond-coated carbides in machining fiberboard and particleboard. The objective of these projects is to bring about considerable improvements in tool life during the machining of wood and wood-based products through the application of hard coatings to the cutting edge. Machining experiments were conducted on a planer using both uncoated and chemical vapor deposition (CVD) diamond-coated tools. Experimental results are presented and the effect of cutting edge geometry on the wear resistance of diamond-coated carbide is discussed. The works conducted to date indicate that CVD diamond coating may impart significant improvements in wear resistance, providing that proper preparation of the substrate and proper selections of tool geometry and cutting conditions are made.}, journal={WEAR}, author={Sheikh-Ahmad, JY and Stewart, JS and Feld, H}, year={2003}, pages={1433–1437} }
