Testing and Validation of a Psychophysically Defined Metric of Display Clutter

JOURNAL OF AEROSPACE INFORMATION SYSTEMS, 10(8), 359–368.

By: D. Kaber n, K. Kaufmann n, A. Alexander*, S. Kim*, J. Naylor*, L. Prinzel*, C. Pankok n, G. Gil n

TL;DR: Although a tunnel (highway in the sky) feature also contributed to clutter, pilots achieved higher navigation system failure detection rates when the tunnel was used, and displays including synthetic vision system features were perceived as significantly more cluttered than those without. Perceived Clutter in Advanced Cockpit Displays: Measurement and Modeling with Experienced Pilots

AVIATION SPACE AND ENVIRONMENTAL MEDICINE, 79(11), 1007–1018.

By: D. Kaber n, A. Alexander*, E. Stelzer*, S. Kim*, K. Kaufmann* & S. Hsiang*

author keywords: display clutter; psychophysical modeling; head-up displays; intelligent flight deck technologies
MeSH headings : Adult; Aerospace Medicine; Aviation; Cohort Studies; Computer Graphics; Computer Simulation; Female; Humans; Male; Middle Aged; Models, Biological; User-Computer Interface; Visual Perception
TL;DR: Head-up display features, including SVS, EVS, traffic collision avoidance system symbology, flight pathway guidance, and different primary flight display symbol sets are evaluated on pilot perceptions of clutter to identify terminology pilots use to describe clutter and latent display variables that drive perceived clutter.
