Mathematical modeling of genetic pest management through female-specific lethality: Is one locus better than two?

By: M. Vella n, F. Gould n & A. Lloyd n

author keywords: eradication; female killing; mathematical modeling; multilocus; population genetics
TL;DR: A population genetics model with density dependence is used to evaluate the relative effectiveness of female killing approaches based on single- and two-construct arrangements and finds that the single-construct arrangement results in slightly faster population suppression, but the two- construct arrangement can eventually cause stronger suppression and cause local elimination with a smaller release size. Rapid evolution of knockdown resistance haplotypes in response to pyrethroid selection in Aedes aegypti

Baltzegar, J., Vella, M., Gunning, C., Vasquez, G., Astete, H., Stell, F., … Gould, F. (2021, July 9). EVOLUTIONARY APPLICATIONS, Vol. 7.

By: J. Baltzegar n, M. Vella n, C. Gunning*, G. Vasquez*, H. Astete*, F. Stell*, M. Fisher*, T. Scott* ...

author keywords: Aedes aegypti; dominance; insecticide resistance; kdr; knockdown resistance; selection
TL;DR: This study describes the evolution of knockdown resistance (kdr) haplotypes in Aedes aegypti in response to pyrethroid insecticide use over the course of 18 years in Iquitos, Peru, providing evidence for the direct connection between programmatic citywidepyrethroid spraying and the increase in frequency of specific kdr haplotypes. Locally Fixed Alleles: A method to localize gene drive to island populations

By: J. Sudweeks n, B. Hollingsworth n, D. Blondel n, K. Campbell, S. Dhole n, J. Eisemann*, O. Edwards*, J. Godwin n ...

MeSH headings : Alleles; Animals; Biodiversity; Islands
TL;DR: This paper proposes the “Locally Fixed Alleles” approach as a novel means for localizing elimination by a drive to an island population that exhibits significant genetic isolation from neighboring populations and explores the feasibility and degree of localization that can be achieved.
