Biomolecular Minerals and Volcanic Glass Bio-Mimics to Control Adult Sand Flies, the Vector of Human Leishmania Protozoan Parasites

BIOMOLECULES, 13(8).

By: K. Chen n, J. Deguenon n, R. Lawrie n & R. Roe n

author keywords: industrial biomolecular minerals; sand flies; Imergard; Celite
TL;DR: Proof of concept was established for the use of these biominerals for sand fly and leishmaniasis disease control and scanning electron microscopy of dead sand flies showed high coating levels of Celite only on the sides of the thorax and on the tarsi, suggesting an alternative mode of action for mechanical insecticides. Bacterial Microbiota of Field-Collected Helicoverpa zea (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) from Transgenic Bt and Non-Bt Cotton

MICROORGANISMS, 9(4).

By: J. Deguenon n, A. Dhammi n, L. Ponnusamy n, N. Travanty n, G. Cave n, R. Lawrie n, D. Mott n, D. Reisig n, R. Kurtz*, R. Roe n

author keywords: Helicoverpa zea; cotton; Bt; resistance; tolerance; microbiota
TL;DR: It is found that WideStrike samples had a higher bacterial density and diversity per larva than insects collected from non-Bt cotton over two field seasons, and argues for more research to better understand the role of cotton–bollworm–bacteria interactions and the impact on Bt toxin caterpillar susceptibility. Characterization of Long Non-Coding RNAs in the Bollworm, Helicoverpa zea, and Their Possible Role in Cry1Ac-Resistance

INSECTS, 13(1).

By: R. Lawrie n, R. Mitchell n, J. Deguenon n, L. Ponnusamy n, D. Reisig*, A. Pozo-Valdivia, R. Kurtz*, R. Roe n

author keywords: long non-coding RNAs; Helicoverpa zea; Bt-resistance; Cry1Ac resistance; RNA-seq; lncRNA; bollworms; gene regulation
TL;DR: Characterization of non-coding genetic mechanisms in Helicoverpa zea will improve the understanding of the genomic evolution of insect resistance, improve the identification of specific regulators of coding genes in general, and is the first step for potentially targeting these regulators for pest control and resistance management. Role of long non-coding RNA in DEET- and fipronil-mediated alteration of transcripts associated with Phase I and Phase II xenobiotic metabolism in human primary hepatocytes

PESTICIDE BIOCHEMISTRY AND PHYSIOLOGY, 167.

By: R. Lawrie n, R. Mitchell n, A. Dhammi n, A. Wallace n, E. Hodgson n & R. Roe n

author keywords: Long non-coding RNA; DEET; Fipronil; Xenobiotic metabolism; Environmental chemicals; Cytochrome P450
MeSH headings : DEET; Hepatocytes; Humans; Insect Repellents; Pyrazoles; RNA, Long Noncoding
TL;DR: The impact of two environmental chemicals used in and around homes, the insect repellent DEET and the phenylpyrazole insecticide fipronil, and the role of altered lncRNAs associated with xenobiotic induction, human diseases and chemical mixtures is discussed. (via Semantic Scholar)
