The results indicate that niacin treatment may influence the pathogenicity of B. avium infection, and infected poults exhibited a 96-97% loss of cilia along the tracheal epithelial border, compared with only a 4-5% loss in controls.

Liver tryptophan 2,3-dioxygenase (TPO) activity was depressed significantly by the Bordetella avium infection localized in the trachea of the turkey poult and Tryptophan, given orally, induced a significant increase in TPO activity in both control and infected poults.
