Phylogenetic relatedness of the M2 double-stranded RNA in Rhizoctonia fungi

MYCOLOGIA, 100(4), 555–564.

By: N. Charlton n, I. Carbone n, S. Tavantzis* & M. Cubeta n

author keywords: anastomosis groups; binucleate Rhizoctonia; Ceratobasidium; mycoviruses; Thanatephorus
MeSH headings : Haplotypes; Molecular Sequence Data; Mycological Typing Techniques; Phylogeny; Plant Diseases / microbiology; Polymerase Chain Reaction; RNA, Double-Stranded / genetics; RNA, Viral / genetics; Rhizoctonia / classification; Rhizoctonia / genetics; Rhizoctonia / isolation & purification; Rhizoctonia / virology; Soil Microbiology
TL;DR: The rooted gene genealogies from coalescent simulations suggested that the ancestral M2 dsRNA haplotype most likely evolved in Thanatephorus and has been acquired recently by isolates of Ceratobasidium. (via Semantic Scholar)

2007 journal article

Transmission of the M2 double-stranded RNA in Rhizoctonia solani anastomosis group 3 (AG-3)

MYCOLOGIA, 99(6), 859–867.

By: N. Charlton* & M. Cubeta n

author keywords: basidiomycete; horizontal transmission; mitochondrial markers; mycovirus; nuclear markers
MeSH headings : Gene Transfer, Horizontal; Genetic Markers; Mycelium / genetics; Polymorphism, Restriction Fragment Length; RNA, Double-Stranded / genetics; RNA, Fungal / genetics; Reverse Transcriptase Polymerase Chain Reaction; Rhizoctonia / genetics; Solanaceae / microbiology
TL;DR: It is suggested that transmission can occur between somatically incompatible isolates of R. solani AG-3 but that maintenance of the dsRNA in the recipient isolates was not stable after repeated subculturing on nutrient medium. (via Semantic Scholar)
