The Exiguobacterium genus: biodiversity and biogeography

EXTREMOPHILES, 13(3), 541–555.

By: T. Vishnivetskaya n, S. Kathariou n & J. Tiedje*

author keywords: Exiguobacterium; PFGE; Macroarray; Psychrophilic and thermophilic adaptations
MeSH headings : Biodiversity; DNA, Bacterial / genetics; Electrophoresis, Gel, Pulsed-Field; Genes, Bacterial; Geography; Gram-Positive Bacteria / classification; Gram-Positive Bacteria / genetics; Gram-Positive Bacteria / growth & development; Gram-Positive Bacteria / isolation & purification; Nucleic Acid Hybridization; Phylogeny; Polymerase Chain Reaction; RNA, Ribosomal, 16S / genetics
TL;DR: Different molecular approaches for the comparative analysis of 24 isolates from markedly diverse environments including ancient Siberian permafrost and hot springs at Yellowstone National Park suggested that Exiguobacterium strains formed two distinct divisions that generally agreed with temperature ranges for growth. 2007 journal article

Effect of low temperature and culture media on the growth and freeze-thawing tolerance of Exiguobacterium strains

CRYOBIOLOGY, 54(2), 234–240.

By: T. Vishnivetskaya n, R. Siletzky n, N. Jefferies n, J. Tiedje* & S. Kathariou n

author keywords: low temperature growth; freeze-thawing; freezing tolerance; Exiguobacterium; cryotolerance; permafrost
MeSH headings : Acclimatization / physiology; Cell Culture Techniques; Cold Climate; Culture Media; Gram-Positive Asporogenous Rods / cytology; Gram-Positive Asporogenous Rods / growth & development; Gram-Positive Asporogenous Rods / physiology; Temperature
TL;DR: Surprisingly, significant protection to repeated freeze-thawing was also observed when bacteria were grown on agar at either 4 or 24 degrees C, and the effect of growth conditions (broth or surface growth, and temperature) on cryotolerance of the Exiguobacterium strains was investigated. 2006 journal article

Psychrobacter cryohalolentis sp nov and Psychrobacter arcticus sp nov., isolated from Siberian permafrost

INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF SYSTEMATIC AND EVOLUTIONARY MICROBIOLOGY, 56, 1285–1291.

By: C. Bakermans*, H. Ayala-del-rio*, M. Ponder*, T. Vishnivetskaya n, D. Gilichinsky*, M. Thomashow*, J. Tiedje*

MeSH headings : Cold Climate; DNA, Bacterial / genetics; Fatty Acids / analysis; Ice; Molecular Sequence Data; Phospholipids / analysis; Phylogeny; Psychrobacter / classification; Psychrobacter / genetics; Psychrobacter / isolation & purification; Siberia
TL;DR: DNA-DNA hybridization data supported gyrB tree topologies and established two relatedness groups within the three isolates; neither of these groups was related at the species level to any previously described Psychrobacter species. (via Semantic Scholar)

2005 journal article

Putative transposases conserved in Exiguobacterium isolates from ancient Siberian permafrost and from contemporary surface habitats

APPLIED AND ENVIRONMENTAL MICROBIOLOGY, 71(11), 6954–6962.

By: T. Vishnivetskaya n & S. Kathariou n

MeSH headings : Bacillaceae / enzymology; Bacillaceae / genetics; Bacillaceae / isolation & purification; DNA Transposable Elements; Ecosystem; Genotype; Geologic Sediments / microbiology; Ice; Molecular Sequence Data; Paleontology; Phylogeny; Sequence Analysis, DNA; Siberia; Soil Microbiology; Transposases / genetics; Transposases / metabolism
TL;DR: Analysis of the genome sequence of the most ancient available Exiguobacterium isolate revealed numerous putative transposase sequences, primarily of the IS200/IS605, IS30, and IS3 families, and these findings suggest that, prior to their entrapment in permafrost, isolates had acquired transposased and that conserved transposases are present in ExIGuobacteria spp. (via Semantic Scholar)
