Scale insects contribute to spider conservation in urban trees and shrubs

Wilson, C. J., & Frank, S. D. (2023, March 21). JOURNAL OF INSECT CONSERVATION, Vol. 3.

By: C. Wilson n & S. Frank n

author keywords: Urban tree; Spider community; Conservation; Natural enemy
TL;DR: These findings suggest that scale-infested urban trees, and the robust arthropod communities they support, conserve certain spider guilds, and these benefits extend to other plants in the landscape. (via Semantic Scholar)

Urban tree pests can support biological control services in landscape shrubs

Wilson, C. J. J., & Frank, S. D. D. (2023, March 13). BIOCONTROL, Vol. 3.

By: C. Wilson n & S. Frank n

author keywords: Scale insect; Conservation biological control; Urban tree; Natural enemy; Banker plant
TL;DR: The results suggest that scale-infested trees can support biological control services in shrubs below them but that this effect can vary depending on prey and shrub species. (via Semantic Scholar)

Does urbanization favour exotic bee species? Implications for the conservation of native bees in cities

BIOLOGY LETTERS, 15(12).

author keywords: exotic bees; native bees; urbanization; urban ecology; conservation; urban agriculture
MeSH headings : Animals; Bees; Biodiversity; Cities; Urbanization
TL;DR: A negative relationship between native and exotic bee abundance at sites with high total bee abundance is found, suggesting that exotic bees may negatively affect native bee populations, and complicate the emerging paradigm of cities as key sites for pollinator conservation. Geographic Biases in Bee Research Limits Understanding of Species Distribution and Response to Anthropogenic Disturbance

FRONTIERS IN ECOLOGY AND EVOLUTION, 7.

author keywords: bee decline; land-use change; pollinator conservation; global change; bee communities
TL;DR: It is illustrated how a limited sampling effort can advance knowledge about bee species distributions, yielding species occurrence records at local and regional scales, and recommended that future research efforts focus on poorly sampled geographic regions, especially those affected by anthropogenic disturbance. The effects of urbanization on bee communities depends on floral resource availability and bee functional traits

PLOS ONE, 14(12).

By: C. Wilson* & M. Jamieson*

MeSH headings : Animals; Animals, Wild / physiology; Bees / physiology; Flowers / physiology; Quantitative Trait, Heritable; Species Specificity; Temperature; Urbanization
TL;DR: It is found that urbanization positively affected bee diversity and evenness but had no effect on total abundance or species richness, and the results indicate that increasing the abundance and richness of floral resources could partially compensate for negative effects of urbanization on bees, the effectiveness of such measures may be limited by other factors, such as urban warming.
