Strain persistence and fluctuation of multiple-antibiotic resistant Campylobacter coli colonizing turkeys over successive production cycles

FOODBORNE PATHOGENS AND DISEASE, 2(1), 103–110.

By: B. Lee n, N. Reimers, H. Barnes, C. D'Lima n, D. Carver n & S. Kathariou n

MeSH headings : Animals; Anti-Bacterial Agents / pharmacology; Bacterial Typing Techniques; Campylobacter coli / drug effects; Campylobacter coli / growth & development; Cecum / microbiology; DNA, Bacterial / analysis; Drug Resistance, Bacterial; Drug Resistance, Multiple, Bacterial; Electrophoresis, Gel, Pulsed-Field; Microbial Sensitivity Tests; Molecular Epidemiology; Turkeys / microbiology
TL;DR: The dynamics of colonization of turkeys by thermophilic campylobacters that are resistant to multiple antibiotics is poorly understood and repeated isolation of these multiresistant C. coli from successive flocks likely reflected persistence of the organisms in currently unknown reservoirs in the production environment. Campylobacter colonization of sibling turkey flocks reared under different management conditions

JOURNAL OF FOOD PROTECTION, 67(7), 1463–1468.

By: K. Smith n, N. Reimers n, H. Barnes n, B. Lee n, R. Siletzky n & S. Kathariou n

MeSH headings : Animal Husbandry / methods; Animals; Campylobacter / classification; Campylobacter / growth & development; Campylobacter / isolation & purification; Campylobacter Infections / microbiology; Campylobacter Infections / transmission; Campylobacter Infections / veterinary; Disease Transmission, Infectious / veterinary; Female; Infectious Disease Transmission, Vertical / veterinary; Longitudinal Studies; Male; Poultry Diseases / microbiology; Poultry Diseases / transmission; Turkeys
TL;DR: Management practices such as proper litter maintenance, controlled traffic between the TAU farm and other turkey flocks, and other less well-defined aspects of turkey production were likely responsible for the absence of Campylobacter in theTAU flocks before harvest. (via Semantic Scholar)

Polymix breeding with parental analysis of progeny: an alternative to full-sib breeding and testing

THEORETICAL AND APPLIED GENETICS, 103(6-7), 930–943.

By: C. Lambeth*, B. Lee n, . D O'Malley & N. Wheeler*

author keywords: polymix crossing; mating design; genetic fingerprinting; genetic markers; genetic gain
TL;DR: PMX breeding with parental analysis is called, which is easy to implement, ensures good estimates of breeding values of the parent being pollinated, and provides for increased genetic gain opportunity because of the significantly increased number of effective parental combinations tested.
