A promising Ames battery for mutagenicity characterization of new dyes

ENVIRONMENTAL AND MOLECULAR MUTAGENESIS.

By: G. Umbuzeiro n, D. Morales*, F. Vacchi*, A. Albuquerque*, M. Szymczyk n, X. Sui n, N. Vinueza n, H. Freeman n

author keywords: anthraquinones; azo dyes; microplate agar; Salmonella; microsome assay
MeSH headings : Coloring Agents / adverse effects; Coloring Agents / chemistry; Molecular Conformation; Mutagenesis / drug effects; Mutagenicity Tests / methods; Mutagens / adverse effects; Mutagens / chemistry; Salmonella typhimurium / drug effects; Salmonella typhimurium / genetics; Solubility
TL;DR: It is proposed that dyes should be tested in a tiered approach using YG1041 followed by TA97a, TA98, and TA100 in concentration‐response experiments, which provides additional information on the dye mutagenicity database available in the literature. (via Semantic Scholar)

Characterization of synthetic dyes for environmental and forensic assessments: A chromatography and mass spectrometry approach

JOURNAL OF SEPARATION SCIENCE.

By: J. Teran n, Z. Millbern n, D. Shao n, X. Sui n, Y. Liu n, M. Demmler n, N. Vinueza n

author keywords: chromatography; environmental studies; forensics; mass spectrometry; synthetic dyes
TL;DR: This review presents current chromatographic and mass spectrometric methods that are used for the detection and characterization of disperse-, acid-, basic-, and reactive dyes and their derivatives with high specificity and accuracy. (via Semantic Scholar)

Global forensic geolocation with deep neural networks

JOURNAL OF THE ROYAL STATISTICAL SOCIETY SERIES C-APPLIED STATISTICS, 69(4), 909–929.

By: N. Grantham n, B. Reich n, E. Laber n, K. Pacifici n, R. Dunn n, N. Fierer*, M. Gebert*, J. Allwood n, S. Faith n

author keywords: Citizen science; Machine learning; Microbiome; Non-homogeneous Poisson process; Spatial point pattern
TL;DR: The DeepSpace algorithm makes remarkably good point predictions; for example, when applied to the microbiomes of over 1300 dust samples collected across continental USA, more than half of geolocated predictions produced by this model fall less than 100 km from their true origin, which is a 60% reduction in error from competing geolocation methods. Use of standardized bioinformatics for the analysis of fungal DNA signatures applied to sample provenance

FORENSIC SCIENCE INTERNATIONAL, 310.

author keywords: Forensic microbiology; Bioinformatics; Metabarcoding; Sample provenance
MeSH headings : DNA Barcoding, Taxonomic; DNA, Fungal / chemistry; Demography; Forensic Sciences; Fungi; Humans; Reference Values; Soil
TL;DR: Investigating a small-scale approach as an adaptation of a larger metabarcoding study to develop a model for global sample provenance using fungal DNA signatures collected from dust swabs to facilitate a standardized method for consistent, reproducible sample treatment.
