Effects of a Hydroxyl Substituent on the Reactivity of the 2,4,6-Tridehydropyridinium Cation, an Aromatic σ,σ,σ-Triradical

Chemistry - A European Journal, 18(3), 969–974.

By: B. Jankiewicz*, N. Vinueza*, J. Reece*, Y. Lee*, P. Williams*, J. Nash*, H. Kenttämaa*

author keywords: FT-ICR; ion-molecule reactions; reactivity; substituent effects; triradicals
TL;DR: The reactsivity of 3-hydroxy-2,4,6-tridehydropyridinium cation was found to be drastically different from the reactivity of 2,4+, and this change in reactivity is caused by the hydroxyl group that strengthens the interactions between the two radical sites adjacent to it, thus reducing their reactivity. Reactivity of a σ,σ,σ,σ-Tetraradical: The 2,4,6-Tridehydropyridine Radical Cation

Journal of the American Chemical Society, 134(4), 1926–1929.

MeSH headings : Cations / chemical synthesis; Cations / chemistry; Free Radicals / chemical synthesis; Free Radicals / chemistry; Molecular Structure; Pyridines / chemical synthesis; Pyridines / chemistry; Pyridinium Compounds / chemical synthesis; Pyridinium Compounds / chemistry
TL;DR: The 2,4,6-tridehydropyridine radical cation, an analogue of the elusive 1,2,3,5-tetradehydrobenzene, was generated in the gas phase and its reactivity examined, and surprisingly the tetraradical was found not to undergo radical reactions. (via Semantic Scholar)

Substituent Effects on the Nonradical Reactivity of 4-Dehydropyridinium Cation

The Journal of Physical Chemistry A, 116(12), 3089–3093.

MeSH headings : Cations; Electrons; Furans / chemistry; Hydrogen Bonding; Isomerism; Mass Spectrometry; Pyridinium Compounds / chemistry; Spectroscopy, Fourier Transform Infrared; Static Electricity
TL;DR: The gas-phase reactivities of the 4-dehydropyridinium cation and several of its derivatives toward tetrahydrofuran were investigated in a Fourier transform ion electron resonance mass spectrometer and both radical and nonradical reactions were observed. (via Semantic Scholar)

Chemistry - A European Journal, 18(28), 8692–8698.

By: N. Vinueza*, E. Archibold*, B. Jankiewicz*, V. Gallardo*, S. Habicht*, M. Aqueel*, J. Nash*, H. Kenttämaa*

author keywords: biradicals; didehydronaphthalene; FT-ICR; ion-molecule reactions; reactive intermediates
TL;DR: This biradical was found to exclusively undergo radical reactions, as opposed to other related biradicals with nearby radical sites, and some ortho-benzynes have been found to yield similar products. (via Semantic Scholar)
