Seasonal and Latitudinal Trends in Clutch Size: Thermal Constraints During Laying and Incubation

Ecology, 86(8), 2018–2031.

By: C. Cooper*, W. Hochachka*, G. Butcher* & A. Dhondt*

author keywords: clutch size variation; Cornell Nest Record Program; critical temperatures; egg viability; hatching failure; incubation period; latitude gradients; onset of incubation; seasonal constraints
TL;DR: Using general linear mixed models, it is found that large-scale nesting patterns of Eastern Bluebirds and Red-winged Blackbirds are consistent with the egg-viability hypothesis in that females appear to initiate incubation before clutch completion when they lay large clutches at low latitudes. Latitudinal trends in within-year reoccupation of nest boxes and their implications

Journal of Avian Biology, 36(1), 31–39.

By: C. Cooper*, W. Hochachka & A. Dhondt

TL;DR: This work analyzed nest box reoccupation by a multiple-brooding species, the eastern bluebird Sialia sialis, reported by volunteers in a citizen-participation project (1998–2002), and found nest boxes in the southern portion of the bluebird range had, on average 17–33% higher likelihood of repeated egg-laying, brooding, and successful fledging events than Boxes in the north. A different kind of foreshock

Nature, 434(7032), 445–447.

TL;DR: Underwater sound recordings have been used to monitor transform faults in the equatorial Pacific, implicating a mechanism of foreshock generation distinct from that on most continental fault systems. (via Semantic Scholar)

Shaky Ladders, Hyperplane-Defined Functions and Genetic Algorithms: Systematic Controlled Observation in Dynamic Environments

In Lecture Notes in Computer Science (pp. 600–609).

By: W. Rand* & R. Riolo*

TL;DR: This paper has created an extension of hyperplane-defined functions, specifically designed for dynamic environments, which it calls the shaky ladder functions and describes the construction of these functions and presents some preliminary results of a GA operating on these functions. Temporal Progress of Septoria Leaf Spot on Rabbiteye Blueberry (Vaccinium ashei)

Plant Disease, 89(10), 1090–1096.

TL;DR: The results of this study indicate that inoculum of S. albopunctata is present throughout most of the growing season and that infection can occur season-long on leaves of any age, giving rise to a polycyclic epidemic. (via Semantic Scholar)

Phytopathology, 95(1), 108–113.

By: P. Ojiambo* & H. Scherm

TL;DR: In the southeastern United States, Septoria leaf spot, caused by Septoria albopunctata, can result in premature defoliation of blueberry plants during summer and fall, thereby reducing yield potential for the following year. (via Semantic Scholar)

Path dependence and the validation of agent‐based spatial models of land use

International Journal of Geographical Information Science.

Bill Rand

author keywords: agent-based modeling; land-use change; urban sprawl; model validation; complex systems
TL;DR: Two distinct notions of accuracy of land‐use models are identified and a tension between them is highlighted: the invariant region, i.e., the area where land‐ use type is almost certain, and thus path independent; and the variant region, which is the areaWhere land use depends on a particular series of events, and is thus path dependent.
