PLOS ONE, 8(10).

Ed(s): W. Chin

MeSH headings : Absorption; Ammonium Compounds / metabolism; Fluorescence; Fresh Water / microbiology; Nitrogen / metabolism; Phosphorus / metabolism; Photobleaching; Phytoplankton / physiology; Rivers / microbiology; Seasons; Solar Energy; Spectrometry, Fluorescence / methods; Sunlight
TL;DR: This study suggests that the humic-like fluorescence materials could be rapidly and easily photobleached for WDA and PDA CDOM, but the protein-like Fluorescence materials was not photobled, which was favorable to further microbial degradation of mineralization, which partially explained the seasonal dynamic of TDN∶TDP ratio in Lake Taihu. Oyster Larvae Settle in Response to Habitat-Associated Underwater Sounds

PLOS ONE, 8(10).

MeSH headings : Acoustic Stimulation; Animals; Behavior, Animal; Crassostrea / growth & development; Crassostrea / physiology; Cues; Ecosystem; Larva / growth & development; Larva / physiology; North Carolina; Sound
TL;DR: The results suggest that oyster larvae have the ability to respond to sounds indicative of optimal settlement sites, and this is the first evidence that habitat-related differences in estuarine sounds influence the settlement of a mollusk. (via Semantic Scholar)

author keywords: Accelerated failure time model; Markov chain Monte Carlo; Quantile regression; Survival data
MeSH headings : Bayes Theorem; Biometry / methods; Computer Simulation; Humans; Markov Chains; Models, Statistical; Monte Carlo Method; Regression Analysis; Survival Analysis; Uncertainty
TL;DR: This paper takes a semiparametric approach to quantile regression, representing the quantile process as a linear combination of basis functions, and finds that the Bayesian model often gives smaller measures of uncertainty than its competitors, and thus identifies more significant effects.
