2008 journal article

The influence of prior knowledge on viewing and interpreting graphics with macroscopic and molecular representations

SCIENCE EDUCATION, 92(5), 848–867.

By: M. Cook*, E. Wiebe n & G. Carter n

TL;DR: This study investigated how high school students with different levels of prior knowledge transitioned among the macroscopic and molecular representations of the selected cell transport graphics to suggest that students with high prior knowledge distributed their visual attention on conceptually relevant features, whereas low prior knowledge students focused on surface features. 2007 journal article

The interpretation of cellular transport graphics by students with low and high prior knowledge

INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF SCIENCE EDUCATION, 30(2), 239–261.

By: M. Cook*, G. Carter n & E. Wiebe n

TL;DR: Examination of prior knowledge of cellular transport influenced how high school students in the USA viewed and interpreted graphic representations of this topic offered a more complete understanding of how differentially prepared learners view and interpret graphics and have the potential to inform instructional design. Visual Representations of DNA Replication: Middle Grades Students’ Perceptions and Interpretations

Journal of Science Education and Technology, 14(3), 353–365.

By: M. Patrick n, G. Carter n & E. Wiebe n

TL;DR: Since many students have difficulty distinguishing between relevant and irrelevant information, cueing and directing student attention through the instructional representation could allow cognitive resources to be directed to the most relevant material. (via Semantic Scholar)
