Spatiotemporal variation in postlarval recruitment of the Caribbean spiny lobster in the central Bahamas: lunar and seasonal periodicity, spatial coherence, and wind forcing

MARINE ECOLOGY PROGRESS SERIES, 174(1998 Nov. 26), 33–49.

By: D. Eggleston*, R. Lipcius, L. Marshall & S. Ratchford*

author keywords: environmental forcing; Panulirus argus; larval supply; recruitment; settlement; spiny lobster
TL;DR: It is indicated that artificial settlement substrates provide a reliable index of postlarval supply to inshore nursery habitats, and that a combination of stochastic and deterministic forces influence recruitment over various scales of time and space. (via Semantic Scholar)

Size- and scale-dependent chemical attraction contribute to an ontogenetic shift in sociality

ANIMAL BEHAVIOUR, 56(4), 1027–1034.

By: S. Ratchford n & D. Eggleston n

TL;DR: The results of this study suggest that the earliest benthic stages of Caribbean spiny lobsters are unresponsive to conspecific odours, but lobsters greater than 15 mm in carapace length are attracted by conspecial odours; and large lobsters produce a sufficient quantity of scent to attract Conspecifics over distances of at least a few metres, whereas small lobsters cannot. author keywords: Cancer magister; drifters; dungeness crab; estuarine hydrodynamics; fronts; larval transport; recruitment
TL;DR: Variable wind stress during the recruitment period of Dungeness crab, combined with the suggested effect of fronts serving as larval conduits whose direction of transport is influenced by prevailing winds, could significantly influence spatial variation in postlarval supply and subsequent settlement within the estuary.
