Analysis of the production and transaction costs of forest carbon offset projects in the USA

Journal of Environmental Management, 112, 128–136.

By: C. Galik*, D. Cooley* & J. Baker*

Contributors: C. Galik*, D. Cooley* & J. Baker*

author keywords: Transaction costs; Forestry; Carbon credits; Sequestration; United States
MeSH headings : Carbon; Trees; United States
TL;DR: Examination of implementation costs of different forest offset project types operating in different forest types under different accounting and sampling methodologies suggests that accounting could be a large driver in the financial viability of forest offset projects, with transaction costs likely being of largest concern to those projects at the margin. Contributors: E. Ulloa*, C. Anderson*, M. Ardón*, S. Murcia* & A. Valenzuela*

author keywords: Castor canadensis; carbon cycle; decay rate; decomposition; leaf packs; Nothofagus
TL;DR: It is found sub-Antarctic streams have a naturally stable benthic organic matter regime throughout the year with a peak in leaf input from Nothofagus pumilio in autumn, and Beaver ponds significantly increased the retention of organic matter and caused significantly higher decomposition rates. Greenhouse gas fluxes in southeastern U.S. coastal plain wetlands under contrasting land uses

Ecological Applications, 22(1), 264–280.

Contributors: J. Morse*, M. Ardón* & E. Bernhardt*

author keywords: carbon dioxide; denitrification; greenhouse gas; methane; nitrous oxide; North Carolina coastal plain; restoration; soil respiration; wetland
MeSH headings : Carbon Dioxide / chemistry; Carbon Dioxide / metabolism; Environmental Monitoring; Greenhouse Effect; Human Activities; Methane / chemistry; Nitrous Oxide / chemistry; Soil / chemistry; Southeastern United States; Time Factors; Wetlands
TL;DR: Contrary to predictions, greenhouse gas fluxes (as CO2 equivalents) from the restored wetland were lower than from either agricultural fields or unmanaged forested wetlands, and in these acidic coastal freshwater ecosystems, the conversion of agricultural fields to flooded young foresting wetlands did not result in increases in greenhouse gas emissions. Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi Increase Organic Carbon Decomposition Under Elevated CO2

SCIENCE, 337(6098), 1084–1087.

MeSH headings : Carbon / metabolism; Carbon Dioxide / metabolism; Mycorrhizae / metabolism; Nitrogen / metabolism; Plant Development; Plants / microbiology; Soil Microbiology
TL;DR: Evidence is presented from four independent microcosm and field experiments demonstrating that CO2 enhancement of AMF results in considerable soil carbon losses, challenging the assumption that AMF protect against degradation of organic carbon in soil and raising questions about the current prediction of terrestrial ecosystem carbon balance under future climate-change scenarios.
