Albumin coated polyester arterial prostheses: Is xenogenic albumin safe?

Biomaterials, Artificial Cells, and Artificial Organs, 15, 453–481.

By: S. Slimane*, R. Guidoin*, D. Marceau*, M. King*, Y. Merhi*, T. Rao*, L. Martin*, D. Lafreniere-Gagnon*, C. Gosselin*

MeSH headings : Albumins / adverse effects; Albumins / isolation & purification; Animals; Arteries / pathology; Arteries / surgery; Biocompatible Materials; Blood Coagulation; Blood Vessel Prosthesis / adverse effects; Cattle; Dogs; Evaluation Studies as Topic; Polyesters; Species Specificity; Sterilization / methods; Wound Healing
TL;DR: This study evaluated the biocompatibility of xenogenic material by implanting in dogs prostheses coated with bovine albumin and cross-linked with glutaraldehyde and found a slower rate of healing with the coated grafts compared to the preclotted controls did appear to be related to the slow rate of albumin erosion and the potentially cytotoxic effect of the glutarhyde cross-linking agent. Composite Materials for Use in Orthopaedic Applications: Fracture Behavior of Acrylic Bone Cement Reinforced with High Toughness Organic Fibers

In I. H. Marshall (Ed.), Composite Structures 4 (pp. 325–336).

Ed(s): I. Marshall

TL;DR: More fundamental modeling treatments are needed to obtain a quantitative estimate of m icromechan isms, within the framework of the fracture behavior of short fiber composites with weakly bonded constituents as well as to optimize the various mechanical properties with respect to structural parameters and cement preparation techniques.
