Comparing population size estimators for plethodontid salamanders

JOURNAL OF HERPETOLOGY, 38(3), 370–380.

TL;DR: Results indicate that short-term closed-population, robust design, and depletion methods estimate surface population of salamanders (i.e., those near the surface and available for capture during a given sampling occasion) and that in longer duration studies, temporary emigration violates assumptions of both open- and closed- Population mark-recapture estimation models. A preliminary assessment of the Montreal process indicators of air pollution for the United States

ENVIRONMENTAL MONITORING AND ASSESSMENT, 95(1-3), 57–74.

By: J. Coulston n, K. Riitters* & G. Smith*

author keywords: acid deposition; forest health and vitality; multivariate clustering; ozone biomonitoring; spatial analysis; sustainable forests; tropospheric ozone
MeSH headings : Acid Rain; Air Pollutants / analysis; Canada; Cluster Analysis; Environmental Health; Environmental Monitoring / methods; Multivariate Analysis; Nitrates / analysis; Ozone / analysis; Quaternary Ammonium Compounds / analysis; Sulfates / analysis; Trees; United States
TL;DR: The multivariate analysis showed that the oak-hickory and loblolly-shortleaf pine forest types were generally exposed to more air pollution than other forest types, and the redwood, western white pine, and larch forest types weren't exposed to less and offered a new approach to national air pollution assessments. A blocking Gibbs sampling method to detect major genes with phenotypic data from a diallel mating

GENETICS RESEARCH, 83(2), 143–154.

By: W. Zeng n, S. Ghosh n & B. Li n

MeSH headings : Chromosome Mapping / statistics & numerical data; Data Interpretation, Statistical; Models, Genetic; Phenotype; Research Design; Sampling Studies
TL;DR: A parent block Gibbs sampling method was developed and indicated that there might be a recessive major gene affecting height growth in this diallel population of Loblolly pine derived from a 6-parent half-diallel mating. (via Semantic Scholar)

Spatial and temporal variation in detection probability of plethodon salamanders using the robust capture-recapture design

JOURNAL OF WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT, 68(1), 14–24.

author keywords: capture-recapture; detection probability; great smoky mountains national park; plethodontid salamanders; pollock's robust design; program MARK; spatial variation; temporary emigration
TL;DR: When detection probability parameters have the potential to vary over time and space, investigators should develop monitoring designs that permit the estimation of detection probabilities. (via Semantic Scholar)

Landowner attitudes regarding wildlife management on private land in North Carolina

WILDLIFE SOCIETY BULLETIN, 32(1), 209–219.

By: S. Daley, D. Cobb, P. Bromley* & C. Sorenson*

author keywords: attitudes; behavior; human dimensions; landowner; North Carolina; private land; telephone; survey; wildlife management
TL;DR: Evaluating demographic and landownership attributes of private landowners and associated land-use characteristics and assessing regional differences in landowner attitudes and behavior toward wildlife management on private land found that landowners who depended on their property for earned annual income were less likely to consider the aesthetic or intrinsic value of wildlife on their land than those who did not rely on the land for income.
