Fine root chemistry and decomposition in model communities of north-temperate tree species show little response to elevated atmospheric CO2 and varying soil resource availability

Oecologia, 146(2), 318–328.

author keywords: trembling aspen; sugar maple; carbon-based secondary compounds; soil C cycling
MeSH headings : Atmosphere / chemistry; Biomass; Carbon Dioxide / pharmacology; Climate; Ecosystem; Ergosterol / analysis; Fungi / growth & development; Fungi / isolation & purification; Plant Roots / chemistry; Plant Roots / drug effects; Plant Roots / metabolism; Soil / analysis; Soil Microbiology; Trees / chemistry; Trees / drug effects; Trees / metabolism
TL;DR: It is concluded that root contributions to soil carbon cycling will mainly be influenced by fine root production and turnover responses to rising atmospheric [CO2], rather than changes in substrate chemistry. (via Semantic Scholar)

Seasonal and Latitudinal Trends in Clutch Size: Thermal Constraints During Laying and Incubation

Ecology, 86(8), 2018–2031.

By: C. Cooper*, W. Hochachka*, G. Butcher* & A. Dhondt*

author keywords: clutch size variation; Cornell Nest Record Program; critical temperatures; egg viability; hatching failure; incubation period; latitude gradients; onset of incubation; seasonal constraints
TL;DR: Using general linear mixed models, it is found that large-scale nesting patterns of Eastern Bluebirds and Red-winged Blackbirds are consistent with the egg-viability hypothesis in that females appear to initiate incubation before clutch completion when they lay large clutches at low latitudes. Latitudinal trends in within-year reoccupation of nest boxes and their implications

Journal of Avian Biology, 36(1), 31–39.

By: C. Cooper*, W. Hochachka & A. Dhondt

TL;DR: This work analyzed nest box reoccupation by a multiple-brooding species, the eastern bluebird Sialia sialis, reported by volunteers in a citizen-participation project (1998–2002), and found nest boxes in the southern portion of the bluebird range had, on average 17–33% higher likelihood of repeated egg-laying, brooding, and successful fledging events than Boxes in the north.
