Overexpression of the Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) Cry2Aa2 protein in chloroplasts confers resistance to plants against susceptible and Bt-resistant insects

PROCEEDINGS OF THE NATIONAL ACADEMY OF SCIENCES OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, 96(5), 1840–1845.

By: M. Kota n, H. Daniell n, S. Varma n, S. Garczynski n, F. Gould n & W. Moar n

author keywords: chloroplast transformation; insecticide resistance; resistance management
MeSH headings : Animals; Bacillus thuringiensis / genetics; Bacillus thuringiensis Toxins; Bacterial Proteins / biosynthesis; Bacterial Proteins / genetics; Bacterial Toxins; Biological Assay; Chloroplasts / physiology; Endotoxins / biosynthesis; Endotoxins / genetics; Hemolysin Proteins; Moths; Pest Control, Biological; Plants, Genetically Modified; Plants, Toxic; Polymerase Chain Reaction; Recombinant Proteins / biosynthesis; Spodoptera; Tobacco / genetics; Tobacco / physiology
TL;DR: The results suggest that plants expressing high levels of a nonhomologous Bt protein should be able to overcome or at the very least, significantly delay, broad spectrum Bt-resistance development in the field. (via Semantic Scholar)

Histopathological effects and growth reduction in a susceptible and a resistant strain of Heliothis virescens (Lepidoptera : Noctuidae) caused by sublethal doses of pure Cry1A crystal proteins from Bacillus thuringiensis

BIOCONTROL SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY, 9(2), 239–246.

By: A. Martinez-Ramirez, F. Gould* & J. Ferre

author keywords: Heliothis virescens; tobacco budworm; Bacillus thuringiensis; endotoxin; crystal proteins; insecticide resistance; histopathology
TL;DR: Two strains of the tobacco budworm Heliothis virescens, one selected in the laboratory for resistance to Cry1Ac crystal protein from Bacillus thuringiensis and an unselected control strain, were exposed to sublethal doses of pure Cry1A crystal proteins. (via Semantic Scholar)

Spread of resistance in spatially extended regions of transgenic cotton: Implications for management of Heliothis virescens (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae)

Journal of Economic Entomology, 92(1), 1–16.

By: S. Peck*, F. Gould* & S. Ellner*

TL;DR: It is found that the spatial scale and the temporal pattern of refuges can have a strong effect on the development of resistance to B. thuringiensis in transgenic cotton and delays in larval development time on Bt cotton may either increase or decrease the rate of resistance development, depending on complex interactions with the length of the growing season.
