Comparison of genetic algorithms, random restart, and two-opt switching for solving large location-allocation problems

Computers & Operations Research, 23(6), 587–596.

By: C. Houck n, J. Joines n & M. Kay n

TL;DR: This paper examines the application of a genetic algorithm used in conjunction with a local improvement procedure for solving the location-allocation problem, a traditional multifacility location problem, and demonstrated that the genetic algorithm provides the best solutions. Selecting valid in vitro biocompatibility tests that predict the in vivo healing response of synthetic vascular prostheses

BIOMATERIALS, 17(19), 1835–1842.

By: Y. Marois, R. Guidoin*, R. Roy*, T. Vidovsky*, B. Jakubiec*, M. Sigot-Luizard*, J. Braybrook, Y. Merhi ...

author keywords: biocompatibility; vascular prostheses; cell culture; endothelial cells
MeSH headings : Analysis of Variance; Animals; Biocompatible Materials; Blood Vessel Prosthesis / standards; CD18 Antigens / biosynthesis; CD18 Antigens / immunology; Cell Survival / physiology; Cells, Cultured; Complement Activation; Endothelium, Vascular / cytology; Endothelium, Vascular / physiology; Fibroblasts / cytology; Fibroblasts / drug effects; Gelatin / chemistry; Humans; Lymphocyte Activation / immunology; Lymphocyte Activation / physiology; Mice; Neutrophils / cytology; Neutrophils / immunology; Neutrophils / metabolism; Polyesters / metabolism; Polyesters / toxicity; Receptors, Interleukin-2 / metabolism; Spectroscopy, Fourier Transform Infrared; T-Lymphocytes / cytology; T-Lymphocytes / immunology; T-Lymphocytes / metabolism; Wound Healing / immunology; Wound Healing / physiology
TL;DR: It is concluded that the two cell activation measurements, the DC assay on endothelial cells and ED assay on fibroblasts, are useful in predicting the in vivo healing response of arterial polyester substitutes. (via Semantic Scholar)

Efficiency of an external support to reduce lipid infiltration into venous grafts: In vitro evaluation

Artificial Organs, 20, 1208–1214.

By: X. Deng*, Y. Marois*, R. Guidoin*, Y. Merhi*, P. Stroman*, M. King*, Y. Douville*

MeSH headings : Animals; Biocompatible Materials / metabolism; Blood Vessel Prosthesis / adverse effects; Blood Vessel Prosthesis / standards; Cholesterol / metabolism; Dogs; Female; In Vitro Techniques; Isotope Labeling; Jugular Veins / metabolism; Jugular Veins / physiology; Jugular Veins / ultrastructure; Male; Microscopy, Electron, Scanning; Perfusion; Polytetrafluoroethylene / metabolism; Pressure; Tritium
TL;DR: Under arterial pressure, veins experience excessive distention, which leads to significant increases in both filtration flow and cholesterol uptake, and an external wrap or support of ePTFE material protects veins from excessive distension and thus may prevent atherosclerosis in venous grafts by reducing cholesterol uptake.
