1998 journal article

Foliar carbon isotope discrimination in Larix species and sympatric evergreen conifers: a global comparison

OECOLOGIA, 114(2), 153–159.

By: B. Kloeppel*, S. Gower*, I. Treichel* & S. Kharuk*

author keywords: foliar nitrogen; needle age; specific leaf area; water use efficiency; delta(13) carbon
TL;DR: Future studies should examine the potential effect that global warming may have on the distribution of larch forests because the water use efficiency of larches is commonly less than co-occurring evergreen conifers and the boreal and high-latitude environments are likely to experience the greatest climate warming. Seasonal changes in leaf nitrogen pools in two Salix species

Tree Physiology, 18, 45–51.

By: O. Kull*, A. Koppel & A. Noormets*

TL;DR: A strong vertical gradient of mass-based leaf nitrogen concentration was detected at the beginning of the growing season, and decreased steadily during canopy development, and the photosynthetic photon flux density gradient inside the canopy changed during the season, most probably because of changes in leaf area and leaf angle distributions.
