Unique parasite aDNA in moa coprolites from New Zealand suggests mass parasite extinctions followed human-induced megafauna extinctions

Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, 115(7), 1411–1413.

MeSH headings : Animals; Extinction, Biological; Fossils; New Zealand; Parasites; Thoracica
TL;DR: One recent technological advance, ancient DNA (aDNA) metabarcoding, is applied to confirm previous discoveries and report new details about moa and kakapo diets, parasites, and niches, to confirm Zealandia was a lot different before humans arrived. (via Semantic Scholar)

Handling times and saturating transmission functions in a snail–worm symbiosis

Oecologia, 188(1), 277–287.

By: S. Hopkins*, C. McGregor*, L. Belden* & J. Wojdak*

author keywords: Epidemiology; Helisoma; Chaetogaster; Disease ecology; Symbiosis
MeSH headings : Animals; Ecology; Models, Biological; Population Density; Population Dynamics; Snails; Symbiosis
TL;DR: It is suggested that contact rates saturate with host density in this system because each snail contact requires a non-instantaneous handling time, and additional possible contacts do not occur during that handling time. (via Semantic Scholar)

Following Pesticide Labels: A Continued Journey Toward User Comprehension and Safe Use

Current Opinion in Environmental Science & Health.

By: A. Dugger-Webster n & C. LePrevost n

TL;DR: A literature review focuses on studies published 2015–2017 and finds that label characteristics; regulatory systems; and user demographics, perceptions and lived experience, technical knowledge, training and education on pesticides, and trusted sources of pesticide information all impact how users follow a label. Integrated Population Modeling Provides the First Empirical Estimates of Vital Rates and Abundance for Polar Bears in the Chukchi Sea

Scientific Reports.

MeSH headings : Alaska; Animals; Arctic Regions; Breeding / standards; Climate Change; Ecosystem; Female; Ice Cover; Male; Population Dynamics / statistics & numerical data; Population Dynamics / trends; Reproduction / physiology; Survival Rate / trends; Uncertainty; Ursidae / physiology
TL;DR: An integrated population model is developed to analyze capture-recapture, radiotelemetry, and count data for the Chukchi Sea subpopulation of polar bears (Ursus maritimus), 2008–2016, consistent with other lines of evidence suggesting the Chokchi SeaSubpopulation has been productive in recent years, although it is uncertain how long this will continue given sea-ice loss due to climate change. Combined impacts of multiple non-native mammals on two life stages of a critically endangered Neotropical tree

Biological Invasions, 20(11), 3055–3068.

author keywords: Araucaria angustifolia; Exotic species; Invasion ecology; Invasive species; Keystone species; Life stages; Seed predation
TL;DR: It is found that Paraná pine seeds constitute an autumn food resource for a native community richer than previously thought, with 70 bird and mammal species as confirmed or potential seed consumers, of which 40 were not previously recognized as such. (via Semantic Scholar)

Harmful Algal Blooms: a compendium desk reference

JoAnn Burkholder

Ed(s): S. Shumway, J. Burkholder & S. Morton

TL;DR: While HABs are as diverse as the water bodies they impact, this chapter focuses on some specific examples of known HAB taxa that affect inland waters in North America and highlight some of the important strategies used by these species to enable their excessive growth. (via Semantic Scholar)

The inside tract: The appendicular, cecal, and colonic microbiome of captive aye-ayes

American Journal of Physical Anthropology, 166(4), 960–967.

MeSH headings : Animals; Animals, Zoo; Appendix / microbiology; Bacteria / classification; Bacteria / genetics; Colon / microbiology; DNA, Bacterial / analysis; DNA, Bacterial / genetics; Fatty Alcohols / poisoning; Female; Gastrointestinal Microbiome / physiology; Male; Strepsirhini / microbiology; Strepsirhini / physiology
TL;DR: The diversity and composition of appendicular, cecal, and colonic consortia relative to the aye-aye's unusual feeding ecology are described and the theory that the appendix functions as a safe-house for beneficial bacteria is supported. (via Semantic Scholar)

The critical role of dietary foliage in maintaining the gut microbiome and metabolome of folivorous sifakas

Scientific Reports, 8(1).

MeSH headings : Animals; Female; Gastrointestinal Microbiome / physiology; Herbivory / physiology; Male; Metabolome / physiology; Strepsirhini / metabolism; Strepsirhini / microbiology
TL;DR: By providing experimental evidence that the folivore GMB is sensitive to minor changes in dietary foliage, this work reveals the fragility of specialist GMBs, with implications for managing the wellbeing of endangered wildlife. (via Semantic Scholar)

Expanded view of the ecological genomics of ant responses to climate change

In bioRxiv (Preprint No. 302679).

TL;DR: It is found that after controlling for both spatial autocorrelation and phylogenetics ant genome size was marginally correlated with sample site climate similarity, and minimum temperature showed the strongest correlation with genome size, suggesting that temperature extremes could be a selective force acting on ant genomes. The presence of algae mitigates the toxicity of copper-based algaecides to a nontarget organism

Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry, 37(8), 2132–2142.

author keywords: Risk assessment; Algae; Algaecides; Daphnia magna; Copper
MeSH headings : Animals; Copper / toxicity; Copper Sulfate / toxicity; Daphnia / drug effects; Environmental Exposure / analysis; Eutrophication; Fresh Water; Herbicides / toxicity; Nonlinear Dynamics; Regression Analysis; Toxicity Tests; Water Pollutants, Chemical / toxicity
TL;DR: Overall, incorporating target competing ligands (i.e., algae) into standard toxicity testing is important for accurate risk assessment, and copper formulation can significantly alter algaecidal efficacy and risks to nontarget organisms. (via Semantic Scholar)
