Cell wall modification by the xyloglucan endotransglucosylase/hydrolase XTH19 influences freezing tolerance after cold and sub-zero acclimation

PLANT CELL AND ENVIRONMENT, 44(3), 915–930.

author keywords: Abiotic stress; Arabidopsis thaliana; apoplast; cell wall remodeling; extracellular matrix; xyloglucan; immunohistochemistry
MeSH headings : Acclimatization; Arabidopsis / enzymology; Arabidopsis / metabolism; Arabidopsis / physiology; Arabidopsis Proteins / metabolism; Arabidopsis Proteins / physiology; Cell Wall / metabolism; Cell Wall / physiology; Freezing; Glycosyltransferases / metabolism; Glycosyltransferases / physiology; Monosaccharides / metabolism; Polysaccharides / metabolism; Spectroscopy, Fourier Transform Infrared
TL;DR: Immunohistochemistry in combination with 3D reconstruction of centers of rosette indicated that epitopes of the xyloglucan-specific antibody LM25 were highly abundant in the vasculature of Col-0 plants after sub-zero acclimation but absent in the XTH19 mutant, shedding new light on the potential roles of cell wall remodeling for the increased freezing tolerance observed after low temperature acclimations.
