1998 journal article

A trade-off between the frequency and duration of bumblebee visits to flowers

Oecologia, 117(1-2), 161–168.

By: K. Jones*, J. Reithel* & R. Irwin*

TL;DR: The potential for a trade-offs between these two components of pollinator service exists when visit duration depends on reward quantity; whether the trade-off is realized will depend on variation in nectar production and on whether pollinators forage systematically. (via Semantic Scholar)

Nectar robbing in Ipomopsis aggregata  : effects on pollinator behavior and plant fitness

Oecologia, 116(4), 519–527.

By: R. Irwin* & A. Brody

TL;DR: The results indicate that hummingbird avoidance of nectar-robbed plants and flowers reduces plant fitness components and suggests that the mutualisms between pollinators and host plants may be affected by other species, such as nectar robbers. (via Semantic Scholar)

Larval Crowding and Adult Nutrition Effects on Longevity and Fecundity of Female Trichogramma nubilale Ertle & Davis (Hymenoptera: Trichogrammatidae)

Larval Crowding and Adult Nutrition Effects on Longevity and Fecundity of Female Trichogramma nubilale Ertle & Davis (Hymenoptera: Trichogrammatidae). Environmental Entomology, 27(2), 508–514.

By: D. Olson* & D. Andow*

TL;DR: Females that are not fed lay the same number of eggs as estimated from dissected females at eclosion, suggesting that females mature additional eggs only if they are fed as adults. (via Semantic Scholar)

Yield loss in conventional and natural rice farming systems

Agriculture, Ecosystems & Environment, 70(2-3), 151–158.

By: D. Andow* & K. Hidaka*

TL;DR: Pests may affect yield loss independently in natural farming, but in conventional paddies, multiple pest injury may interact synergistically, compounding yield loss. (via Semantic Scholar)

Using an F2 Screen to Search for Resistance Alleles to Bacillus thuringiensis Toxin in European Corn Borer (Lepidoptera: Crambidae)

Journal of Economic Entomology, 91(3), 579–584.

By: D. Andow*, D. Alstad*, Y. Pang*, P. Bolin* & W. Hutchison*

TL;DR: Based on a sample of 91 female Ostrinia nubilalis, it is shown with 95% confidence that the frequency of B. thuringiensis resistance alleles from a wild Minnesota population is <0.013, an upper limit to the estimated allele frequency. (via Semantic Scholar)

F2 Screen for Rare Resistance Alleles

Journal of Economic Entomology, 91(3), 572–578.

By: D. Andow* & D. Alstad*

TL;DR: Compared with other methods for detecting and estimating resistance alleles, the F 2 screen will be efficient and accurate, extend the sensitivity of allele-frequency estimation for recessive traits by more than an order of magnitude compared with a discriminating-dose assay, and detect all resistance traits segregating in the initial sample of field-collected insects rather than a subset that responds most rapidly to laboratory selection.
