Determination of vadose and saturated-zone nitrate lag times using long-term groundwater monitoring data and statistical machine learning

Wells, M. J., Gilmore, T. E., Nelson, N., Mittelstet, A., & Böhlke, J. K. (2020, May 5). (Vol. 5). Vol. 5.

TL;DR: The statistical machine learning model results are consistent with previous observations of relatively high-water fluxes and short transit times for water and nitrate in the aquifer and indicate a sharp threshold where high groundwater nitrate concentrations are mostly associated with total travel times of seven years or less. Global forensic geolocation with deep neural networks

JOURNAL OF THE ROYAL STATISTICAL SOCIETY SERIES C-APPLIED STATISTICS, 69(4), 909–929.

By: N. Grantham n, B. Reich n, E. Laber n, K. Pacifici n, R. Dunn n, N. Fierer*, M. Gebert*, J. Allwood n, S. Faith n

author keywords: Citizen science; Machine learning; Microbiome; Non-homogeneous Poisson process; Spatial point pattern
TL;DR: The DeepSpace algorithm makes remarkably good point predictions; for example, when applied to the microbiomes of over 1300 dust samples collected across continental USA, more than half of geolocated predictions produced by this model fall less than 100 km from their true origin, which is a 60% reduction in error from competing geolocation methods. Landscape and climatic effects driving spatiotemporal abundance of Lygus lineolaris (Hemiptera: Miridae) in cotton agroecosystems

Agriculture, Ecosystems & Environment, 295, 106910.

author keywords: Tarnished plant bug; Gossypium hirsutum; Arthropod abundance; Risk description; Climate change
TL;DR: Results of this study suggest that increasing minimum temperatures will favor L. lineolaris and may translate into elevated infestation intensity and increasing dependence on insecticide inputs to manage this problematic pest of cotton. (via Semantic Scholar)

TL;DR: A stochastic epidemiological model calibrated on weekly PRRSV outbreaks accounting for the population dynamics in different pig production phases, breeding herds, gilt development units, nurseries, and finisher farms, of three hog producer companies is developed, showing that intensifyingPRRSV detection and/or vaccination pigs at placement increased the effectiveness of all simulated vaccination strategies.
