CROP SCIENCE, 38(2), 570–571.

By: J. Murphy*, S. Leath n, D. Huynh, R. Navarro & A. Shi*

TL;DR: The germplasm line has grain yield, days to maturity, test weight, kernel weight, grain protein content, and gluten strength similar to Neepawa and the recurrent parent BW90, and is moderately resistant to moderately susceptible reaction to leaf rust. (via Semantic Scholar)

Reply to: Models for the in-host dynamics of malaria revisited: errors in some basic models lead to large overestimates of growth rates

PARASITOLOGY, 117(5), 409–410.

TL;DR: In the accompanying manuscript Saul (1998) points out that a model of within-host malaria population dynamics (Anderson, May & Gupta, 1989) can exhibit unrealistically large growth rates, but this error can be avoided by replacing the parameter r, which is the number of merozoites produced by each parasite at schizogony, with the value ln (r)+1. The eastern Asian and eastern and western North American floristic disjunction: Congruent phylogenetic patterns in seven diverse genera

MOLECULAR PHYLOGENETICS AND EVOLUTION, 10(2), 178–190.

MeSH headings : Asia, Eastern; North America; Phylogeny; Plants / genetics; Species Specificity
TL;DR: Analysis of divergence times using the molecular clock indicates that species of Cornus, Boykinia, and Calycanthus may have diverged at different geological times, suggesting that the floristic disjunction involving eastern Asia and North America may not be simple; it may have involved multiple historical events at very different geological time in different genera. Phylogenetic relationships of cornaceae and close relatives inferred from matK and rbcL sequences

AMERICAN JOURNAL OF BOTANY, 85(2), 285–297.

author keywords: Cornales; matK; molecular evolution; molecular phylogeny; rbcL
TL;DR: Comparisons of matK and rbcL sequences based on one of the most parsimonious rBCL-matK trees indicate that matK has a much higher A-T content and a lower transition:transversion ratio and among- lineages rates of nucleotide substitutions in r bcL are basically homogeneous throughout Cornales, but are more heterogeneous in matK. Origin and biogeography of Aesculus L. (Hippocastanaceae): a molecular phylogenetic perspective

Evolution, 52(1998), 988–997.

TL;DR: It is inferred that Aesculus originated during the transition from the Cretaceous to the Tertiary (~65 M.Y.B.P.) at a high latitude in eastern Asia and spread into North America and Europe as an element of the “boreotropical flora”; the current disjunct distribution of the genus resulted from geological and climatic changes during theTertiary. Assessing hybridization in natural populations of Penstemon (Scrophulariaceae) using hypervariable intersimple sequence repeat (ISSR) bands

MOLECULAR ECOLOGY, 7(9), 1107–1125.

By: A. Wolfe*, Q. Xiang* & . Kephart*

author keywords: diploid hybrid speciation; genetic marker; introgression; ISSR; Penstemon; pollen-mediated gene flow
MeSH headings : California; Crosses, Genetic; DNA Fingerprinting; DNA Primers / chemistry; DNA, Chloroplast / classification; DNA, Plant / chemistry; DNA, Ribosomal / classification; Dinucleotide Repeats / genetics; Diploidy; Electrophoresis, Agar Gel; Genetic Markers; Genetic Variation / genetics; Hybridization, Genetic; Nucleic Acid Hybridization; Phylogeny; Plants / chemistry; Plants / classification; Plants / genetics; Polymerase Chain Reaction; Trinucleotide Repeats / genetics
TL;DR: The results do not support the hybrid origin of P. spectabilis, but do support the hypothesis that P. clevelandii is a diploid hybrid species derived from P. centranthifolius, and demonstrate that pollen‐mediated gene flow via hummingbird vectors is prevalent in the hybrid complex. A role for the actin-bundling protein L-plastin in the regulation of leukocyte integrin function

PROCEEDINGS OF THE NATIONAL ACADEMY OF SCIENCES OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, 95(16), 9331–9336.
