Simulation study of the phase behavior of a planar Maier-Saupe nematogenic liquid

PHYSICAL REVIEW E, 71(4).

By: E. Lomba*, C. Martin*, N. Almarza* & F. Lado*

TL;DR: Study of the phase behavior of a fluid of nematogenic molecules with centers of mass constrained to lie in a plane but with axes free to rotate in any direction finds that simulation predicts the existence of an order-disorder phase transition belonging to the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless type, along with a low temperature gas-liquid transition. Chaotic scattering and escape times of marginally trapped ultracold neutrons

JOURNAL OF RESEARCH OF THE NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF STANDARDS AND TECHNOLOGY, Vol. 110, pp. 367–376.

author keywords: chaotic scattering; escape time; Hamiltonian system; magnetic trap; symplectic integration; ultracold neutrons
TL;DR: It is found that the computed escape time for a particular set of initial conditions does not generally stabilize as the time step parameter is reduced unless the escape time is short, and for energy intervals where more than half of the escape times computed for UCN realizations are numerically well determined, it is predicted the median escape time as a function of the midpoint of the interval.
