1997 journal article

Predation on Colorado potato beetle eggs by generalist predators in research and commercial potato plantings

BIOLOGICAL CONTROL, 8(3), 191–196.

By: A. Hilbeck n, C. Eckel n & G. Kennedy n

author keywords: Leptinotarsa decemlineata; Colorado potato beetle; predation; density dependence; potato; biological control
TL;DR: Field studies quantified predation on Colorado potato beetle eggs and determined the relationship between predation and egg mass abundance in research and commercial potato plantings in eastern North Carolina imply that efforts to reduce Colorado potato beetles populations selectively will not be offset by an according decline in abundance of natural enemies and therefore should be fully compatible with naturally occurring biological control. Suppression of Phytophthora blight in bell pepper by a no-till wheat cover crop

PHYTOPATHOLOGY, 87(3), 242–249.

Contributors: J. Ristaino*, G. Parra* & C. Campbell*

author keywords: epidemiology; sustainable agriculture
TL;DR: Four mechanisms of dispersal of propagules of Phytophthora capsici were investigated through modifications in cultural practices and fungicide applications in field plots of bell pepper, and pathogen dispersal mechanisms were modified most dramatically by the no-till cropping system. Effect of an entomopathogen on adaptation of Heliothis virescens populations to transgenic host plants

ENTOMOLOGIA EXPERIMENTALIS ET APPLICATA, 83(2), 121–135.

author keywords: Nomuraea rileyi; Bacillus thuringiensis toxin; tritrophic interactions; host plant resistance
TL;DR: It is hypothesized that a pathogen should interact with herbivore behavior to accelerate Herbivore adaptation to toxic plants: individuals not adapted to toxin tend to move more on toxic plants, and therefore are more likely to encounter a lethal dose of pathogen, further increasing the probability that they will be eliminated by selection.
